    Input Shaft Seal Install - WTF

    Trying to replace the input shaft seal on the Getrag 260.


    Got the housing off. Seal came out with some difficulty.


    Lubed the new seal and tried to hammer it in with a large socket.


    Managed to bend and tear the seal...


    I ordered another couple from FCP.


    Is there a trick to installing these? Does the hammer and socket method not work? Do I need a press?

      I did mine on the shop floor with no particular difficulty keeping in mind that different seals tend to have different tolerances. Don't install it dry and obviously keep it as square to the casting as possible.

      IME shredded seals usually result from off center force

        Thanks for the input.

        I think this issue I'm having is this on goes in backwards.
        Pressure is applied to the concave side instead of the flat side.

        Neither of the sockets I used fit perfectly into the bottom of the seal.

          I got myself a cheap seal driver set, covers pretty much every size.
          I just replaced all the shaft seals on my getrag transmission without any problems at all.
          It's worth the purchase imo

            No issues driving in the input seal as it goes in "backward".

              what do you mean by backwards? It's installed the same way as any other seal. In fact, the input flange (where the seal goes) has the internal ridge that insures that the seal seats square once installed.

              Did you remove that flange (part in the pic on the right) from the tranny? If no, remove it and install the seal on the bench...carefully. I think I used PVC sch.40 to drive it (2" maybe? don't remember). Also check shims behind that flange, as the one against the bearing can get a grove worn in it over time. If bad, measure the shim with the caliper and order the correct one. Assemble...torque it down...measure for the proper shaft play

                OK, this could be my issue.

                I did remove the flange from the trans.
                When looking at the pic on the right that is what I am referring to as the seal being "backward". The concave side is being pushed on. It's being installed from the back instead of the front.

                I did not remove the inner flange. I was looking at it thinking that may have to happen based on the ridge you are referring too. Plus the seal just seemed to be to big.

                The Bently said to not touch the inner flange.

                  Iím not sure I understand you 100%. Input shaft flange (in the pic) needs to be removed. Remove the the clutch bearing guide tube from it as well (not in the pic). The seal get installed behind that guide tube hence it needs to come off. It doesnít go in backwards, it goes in as typically seals go in. That ridge in the flange will stop the seal and will make sure itís square. Did you see how old one was installed?

                      Input Shaft Seal Install - WTF

                      Just take it off. Apply Curil or similar sealant to reset the tube to the flange...needed due to thru bolts
                      OEM used loctite sealant so you need a little force to get it off once bolts are removed
                      Donít forget to check shim condition and shaft play before the final assembly of the flange to the transmission

                        Took it apart last night.
                        New seal pushed in with hand pressure.

                        Kuril should be here today.
