That could well be because that oil is too thick. Or it could be worn syncro's on 2nd gear, or a combination.

Drain out the 20 weight oil and refill the the transmission with ATF, Redline MTL, or Royal Purple Syncromax. The input shaft rattle will likely return, but the transmission should shift much easier.

I had bmw tsbs and it called for that fluid though. Should i use Redline 75w90 NS or regular redline 75w90?

Wrong stuff for the 260 and I think it's just a stopgap on the 240.

Motor oil isn't the right stuff for a gear box anyway.

Redline MTL or ATF are appropriate for a Getrag 260. If there's a rattle from the transmission with the clutch engaged and the transmission in neutral that goes away when you depress the clutch pedal, the cause will be wear in the transmission input shaft. This is quite normal on a higher mileage transmission and is harmless (if irritating).

That'sw hat I used. But it must come in different weights as I had 70w80 which seems to be too thin. i'll look for redline 75w90.

started a topic Transmission fluid trouble.

    Transmission fluid trouble.

I put redline mtf 70 80 and the trans makes a rattling noise.

    What do you guys run?

Do you think trying a 75 85 oil would help?

The trans feels good and supposedly ran fine until it was in my car with this fluid... it had a mixture of who knows what in before and the noise was quieter. I thought adding this would make the noise get better but it just got louder.

    input?
Working...
