As I mentioned earlier, 5-speed 'box has smaller diameter clutch shaft than the 6-speeder.

Why the same question comes up 10 times a day, for 365 days a year .... ?

well.. the question really is, what clutch will work besides the e34 530 one.

I haven't found any concrete answer to this yet :)

Can someone confirm that e39 540/m5 clutch has the same spline/shaft size as the 5 speed?

If that is true then I shouldn't have a problem finding a flywheel and clutchkit :)

e39 540/m5 flywheel is basicly the same if using obd1

there is no E39 535i here in the states :)

They are different spline sizes. Call rob at UUC and he'll explain it all to you. To purport my statement, I did call him and he confirmed that my application(e34 540i/6) for lightweight combo would work for his kit, which is for the e39 540i/m5 6 speed, 240mm clutch. This will not work on 5 spd because of the input transmission splines.

haha, you do it first ;) I have to cough up more moneyfor international shipping+ import tax and vat that stuff to Iceland.

im almost at that point so kinda scared, already accumulated almost all the parts for swap i just need to choose either arp headstuds or oem headbolts, then i can put everything together and finish the swap in a month haha but until i order my special tool for camshaft alignment and the stupid flywheel bolt socket ill see how long you last until you buy it first

e34 v8 6speeds use a 265mm clutch with a bigger spline for the clutch disc to slip onto. the e39 6 speeds use the small spline so the r39 clutch will not work on an e34 6-speed box. The flywheel will work if the disc mating surface is the same dia.

I'll jump in here with some definitive information... a bunch of us are using the 530i 5 speed in our E30 V8 swaps, since you don't really need the extra gear in the E30 and the size of the 5 speed is much friendlier in the E30 tunnel than the 6 speed. A racer on the West coast and I had been comparing notes on flywheel and clutch compatibility for a while between the x60/x62 V8s and the 5 speed box. Since the transmission is shared with the E36 M3, just a different bellhousing, we figured the tranny would be robust enough and he set out to find a workable, readily available clutch/flywheel package to use. I want to be sure that he gets credit for the R&D here since he spent a fair amount of time and money to find the correct applications and then was willing to [COLOR=blue !important][COLOR=blue ! important]share[/color][/color] it with everyone. Super nice guy Bruce is. What he found is this...

E39 OEM 540i Dual Mass flywheel or lightweight equivalent
E36 328i or E39 528i or Z3 2.8i clutch kit P/N 21 21 1 223 602
E34 530i clutch slave

Now, the OEM clutch kit part number is given, but I highly recommend finding an aftermarket kit of at least a Stage 1 variety. There is a significant enough difference in torque between the 6 and the V8 that premature wear/failure may happen and Stage 1 kits are plentiful and not too expensive.

The flywheel must be an E39 540i Dual Mass or lightweight aluminum like JB Racing's E39 540i flywheel because of the friction diameter and mounting pattern for the Pressure Plate.

This combination has been both Dyno tested and Track tested, so it works, it's readily available and it's not fiction.

I immediately thought of the E34 guys with the 540 automatics that want to swap to manual, but wanted a less expensive/elusive transmission to swap in. This would work perfectly for that application.

Bruce is currently tracking this combo in the Pacific Northwest... JB Racing's E39 540i aluminum flywheel and Clutch Master's E36 328i Stage 1 clutch kit with an M60 and 530i 5 speed trans in his E30. Same setup that is going in my M60/5 speed E30 M3 clone...

Just thought I'd share the info here, since Bruce was gracious enough to share it with me and on another forum, for all to benefit from...

Clutch disc has different diameter center spline / clutch shaft joint for 6-speeder.

I've got 10 splines on the shaft, does 6 speed have more or larger diameter?

Just wondering if a 540/m5 clutch would fit on this gearbox :)

Ok, I'm a little confused.

Planning on LW flywheel for a e39 540i - it should fit right?
Clutch.. Could I use a 240mm clutch intended for dual mass flywheel for 540?
