Odometer not working; how difficultt to replace the gear(s)?

I understand that I have to take out the instrument cluster, but once that's done, how hard is it to take out and replace the worn gear? I've heard that the gears are almost fixed into the cluster, making it difficult to replace them. Is it a better idea to replace the whole SI board instead of just the gear? Thanks.
