i guess from what i have been reading, it can be a couple of things... FPR, coil, intake hoses... make sure they are all in good shape and test test test before you buy parts... way to many people end up replacing parts that don't need to be replaced.. unless you have that kind of money.. in which case... haha, well buy all the parts and get it done...

i would start with the fuel side, check FPR pressure, maybe ohm out the coil, and then check for vaccum leaks... triple check and go from there..

finding stuff like this is fun for me, but i am not sure if that applies to you too..

have fun, be safe and good luck

It's gone back to being just as bad if not worse since the FPR...I've ordered the fuel check valve after reading about the same problem in some other BMW's, i'm hoping this works, if not i'll be testing my coils/ignition system when I can find the time.

This was only when warm? I do have an ohmmeter, time to dig out the bentley and test.

Same here. My coil was only about 10% out of spec but I replaced it and now she starts perfectly without hesitation now :D

It's gotten better after a new FPR, still not fixed...I still havent checked the vacuum leak though, i'm hoping to do that this week.

Found 2 hoses under the intake manifold that have good cracks in them, I tried to replace the fuel pressure regulator and it was just spewing gas out so I may have gotten the wrong regulator, it looks the same, or similar...I'm going to find what hoses those are and order them and see if this fixes my issue.

What kind of lip/spoiler is that in your sig?
Wonder how it will look on a 87 euro chromie.

If you have a Bentley manual follow the test procedures. Mine tested barely within the limits, but it was still a problem.

Had that issue on an 89 GTI too. The coil was part of the problem on that one.

If you can, test first. buy parts when they are confirmed bad.

Sounds like exactly the same problem I had. I had a long start when warm or cold. Only would fire right up if it had only been off for a few minutes.

I replaced the FPR to begin with with no change.

Replaced the in-tank pump with slight change, but not enough.

Replaced several hoses with no change.

Finally replaced the external pump and the coil and the problem was gone.

I did find a cracked hose running from the intake hose to I'm guessing the crankcase or throttle body? I'm not sure if this would have an effect when warm, but i'm going to look around at the other hoses today to make sure I order all the parts I need.

Not yet, i'm going to look at it today, probably check fuel pressure at the rail when its warm, i'm pretty sure its a FPR though.
