Take that timing belt cover off and find out for sure. If there is that much play in the timing belt and the belt is still in one piece, the tensioner must have worked itself loose. There should be very little play in a properly adjusted timing belt.
If the timing belt has slipped and the timing marks on the pulleys are now out af alignment, even the force from cranking the engine without it actually starting can be enough to bend valves. It would probably not result in a catastrophic failure like holes in pistons, busted rocker arms or cracked head, but it would still require reconditioning the head. Ask me how I know (non E30 content).
So if you find an issue here ... 1) try to install and properly adjust a new timing belt and then 2) perform a compression test to make sure the valves have not been bent.
I would not waste any further time on the ECU, coil, etc. until you complete the above.

If it did snap it happeneb wile I was trying to crank her over so im prtty sure I didnt mess up any internals but she still trys to turn over just no spark at all the only reason I suspect a timing issue is beacouse I have an inch of play on the top half of my belt I havent got aroind to pulling the cover off a really giving it a look the car is in gresham and im out in willamina so I cant get back to her till saturday ....but since there cheepe I bought a belt any way just incase .....how much play should the top half of the timing belt have?...mabey I streched it or the tentioner came loose? THIS is what worries me. Timing belt snapped? If so, you're going to have more issues than just your DME
Easiest way to test DME is swapping in a good one. I have had problems with mine (or thought I did) and from the general consensus I got, no real other way of testing it.

i can only feel the top half of my timing belt but when i replaced it 6 months ago i dont remember it bein this loose its hella floppy like its not turning the gear so its not turning the rotor to give spark is kinda where my brains going please lol tell me if my thought process is flawedLeave a comment:

is the dme just another name for the ecu????cuz if it is then i checked it today but it didnt apear to be fried or smell burnt mabey the cheap ass chip in it fried out ??? i dont know my thoughts keep bringing me back to timing so im gonna do that saturday and order a new chip as well just to be safeLeave a comment:

Dme is in the glovebox under the upper trim panel. Not sure how to test it though. Your best bet is to swap in a known good one.Leave a comment:

Well that wouldn't effect spark though. Since your voltage is so low at the coil, I would suspect the dme to be at fault.Leave a comment:

Check the other end of the ignition system too: the crankshaft position sensor (CPS). if it's really dirty, broken or the wires are severed you won't get any spark. On late model e30s you can see it from standing on the spark plug side of the car, then follow the wires looking for breaks. On early models there are 2 CPS but one of them is still out from (I am pretty sure).Leave a comment:
