Long story short I finally swapped a new M20 into my late fathers 87 325is so I could get the thing up and running and back on the road like he was trying to do for the last 10 years (he has since passed 2 years ago). Anyways, I drove it down to NC from Ohio and had major intermitten bogging issues every 30 minutes where it would start to hesitate while driving and almost die if I gave it gas. If I kept it at around 2500 to 3000 rpms the engine would surge slightly keeping it at speed but if I gave it anymore gas it would bog and shut off. I was also getting a CEL and to keep driving the car I would turn the car off and on while coasting and then go again for another 30 minutes.
I finally found out that a couple fuses were missing and some had blown (specifically fuel delivery ones). I replaced them and it ran perfectly.
A couple months ago by and I was driving on the Blue Ridge Parkway and started to go up a hill and the CEL comes on and it starts doing it again. Thinking the same I check the fuses. All are good. I disconnect battery and reconnect. Car fires up and drives fine. After 5 minutes CEL comes back on but car drives ok. So now I'm stumped.
Two days later I'm driving home, within 5 minutes CEL comes on. One hour later on the highway it starts to Bog and almost die. Same symptoms as before. I milk it home by turning it on and off again.
What is going on?!
The only related thing I know is wrong with the car is that the Gas needle jumps like crazy and when the low fuel light comes on I can only put about 11 gallons in the tank. I also smell fuel when I'm at the rear of the car.
