Sorry to raise one from the dead, but I saw this quote in someone's sig, and recognized the symptoms.
I thought this was the weirdest place for a leak! Do you think this could contribute to my shitty idle, too? (It leaks pretty steadily)
Smoke coming from somewhere when I push the eta...

Got any cheetos? Can we stop off at AMPM?Leave a comment:

First thing to check is oil pressure sending unit.
Common leak with higher RPMs, right on the bottom of the motor and can blow back to the cat/exhaust.
Climb under car while running, rev and hold.

yeah because when i push it its almost always at good speed so it probably ends up back there, when im driving slow im not pushing it and so it doesnt leak noticeably i guess or it would be on the motor, headers, or on the floor when i park. so it doesnt suck too badLeave a comment:

hm...so is dangerous to continue pushing the car when it happens? the valve cover is easily replaceable, right? just take off the valve cover and insert gasket?
I used to think it was because of my coolant leaks and steam was coming through, but i fixed all my cooling system stuff (i think), and the area the smoke is coming from isn't consistent with the cooling system anyway.
If oil is leaking onto the exhaust, it can be VERY dangerous. You can cause an engine fire! Don't drive until further inspection.Leave a comment:

Yeah, for my I was luck, only @ high speeds, the wind would blow the oil back onto the cat...Leave a comment:

not trying to thread jack but i have a similar problem. oil somehow getting back onto the cat and burning. at first i got paranoid it was the transmission leaking, but ive checked the fluid level several times and it doesnt drop. its definitely oil, making it all the way back past the tranny before it drips down onto the exhaust. it also seems to be on the tranny support and bottom of the oil pan. im 90 percent sure it IS the valve cover gasket because it seems to be leaking, its just weird how it ends up way back there.Leave a comment:

Could also be transmission seals. If you look underneath the car, does it look like it is smoking from the cat? You may also be able to see it on the exhaust manifold if you look.Leave a comment:

HAHA, same thing happened to me in my 95 M3. Oil pan dipstick O ring, oil got back onto the cat, smoke everywhere.Leave a comment:

90% of the time it is a valve cover gasket. The other 10% of the time you wish it was a valve cover gasket. :)Leave a comment:
