M10 turbo. You can make plenty of power out of it, it bolts in with no modification at all, and you can keep the excellent balance of the twenty-zero-two. A friend of mine has a turbo 2.0l M10 in his E30 doing 263 wheel horses. That'd be perfect for a twenty-zero-two.

Probably quite a bit but to boost an m20 at 12psi would probably cost more than $2000 including motor acquisition. We are talking about a 2002 as well it doesn't take too much to "make it fly."

    how much PSI would a 1.8 M10 need to outboost a 12psi M20?

I guess it's just a compromise from that point on.

    Boosting a 2.5L 6cyl vs boosting a 1.8L 4cyl

The m10 likes boost more than the m20 so what would be the point in swapping in an m20 if you want to turbo?

how much does it cost to swap an M20 into a 2002? Like, what parts are involved?

    I figure with a $400 M20, and $200 G260, it shouldn't cost anymore than a total of $3000 for a decent swap+turbo, no?

My car is already fuel injected.

anyway, I thought of a pretty good plan when talking to some of my friends. There are very many 320 parts cars for 200-500 dollars it would blow our minds. I figured Id pick one of these up, take out the drivetrain (5sp, lsd, ftw), check out the motor, check compression guides, rod bearings etc. swap the 320 motor in WITH megasquirt, or other standalone system with a better headgastket and some ARP headbolts, so it is READY for turbo. then, Research the turbo's and check out richmond pick n pull and sacramento to pick up a smaller japanese or saab turbo. Then the car will be essentially ready for a swap Ill just need to source out the other parts. In addition it will make life easier to take it one step at a time.

    good plan?

This is how to make it really fly http://kalecoauto.com/index.php?main...products_id=16

But to make it go fast if your current M10 is in good mechanical order then I suggest that you leave it as is and spend you money on the turbo and engine management. You can turbocharge an carburetor but you are better off going fuel injected. First research and plan out your engine management (how are you going to run ignition and injectors?) then plan out your turbo setup. This part will easily blow your $2000. If you want to make good power you need to have a good setup (junkyard turbos might not be included in this "good setup" unless it is exactly what you need). The saying "a turbo is a turbo is a turbo" is not really accurate. The turbo from a Chevy Sprint is not the same as one from a Cummins Diesel. Finding a turbo in the junkyard that is exactly what you need might not be easy.
Once you have your stuff all figured out and your 2002 turbo running, then start saving your money because sooner to later you will blow something on your engine. Once you blow something then take the money you have been saving and use it to really build your M10 engine.
Then you will have a built engine mated to a turbo and engine management system that has been tested and fine tuned.

Thats the guy in sacramento I was talking about.
He spend alot of money on a turbo though. I was only planning on using a junkyard turbo.

Go back to the faq and read all of charlie mac's blog-titled my 500$ pile of S*&t in the project blog section. It will be on one of the last two pages.
He is a very skilled, capable home mechanic. Did all the work himself and spent more than the 2000. If you want this to be a reliable car, take the time to do it right.

200 rebuilt head (source one out)
    50 318i manifold from turbo
    400 turbo mani
    500 MS components
    100 fuel injection components
    100 sensors
    100 for oil cooler.
    100 for piping
    2100 dollars.
    good estimate I guess

    considering

    m20 swap
    m20 motor 100-500 dollars
    oil cooler 100

    sensors 100
    cheaper? yet not as fun.

i do not think that a lot of people here have m10 turbo set ups. i could be really wrong but i have never seen any threads about them here. more so on the 02 faq page.
but you will need to do a few things like run a mega squirt set up. you need that fuel injection. i just do not think that $2000 will cut it. turbo manifolds are expensive and so are other turbo parts. i guess you could try and score a nice used one like this, but you are going to need to be lucky. man there is a big list of parts for a turbo build. you should do it though. it would be a really nice set up!!!

Im actually a pretty frequent user of the 2002faq, I just thought it would be better to ask you folks who know more about m20's and m10 turbos(which are more popular here) also.

seems like there is an obivous consensus for m10 turbo hah.
