I was drifting a Cressida for the longest all I had was coilovers and a welded diff and that car slid like no tomorrow. Your spring rate shouldn't be so much, you'll be fine with 8k front/6k rear. I was running 12k/10k on my car but mine was heavier than shit. Bracing wont make a big difference but you'll notice it a bit, having a tri-point in the front will make a decent improvement. Wheel and tire selection is crucial as well, you don't want a real big profile tire or you'll be drifting on that LOL (I learned this the hard way.)

I'll be drifting my e30 as well but I haven't decided if I'm going welded or LSD. Just need to do some more suspension upgrades.

Driftworks.com/forum/ is Good one too. Mostly jap cars but a few BMWs.

I have done it this way^ Very unpredictable transitions, very bouncy in the corners and jerky. This years set up will be 6k6k Bc coilovers, Vert front sway bar and soon bigger rear sway. Going to make both adj.

Basic Drift Chassis Setup Part 2 By Mike Kojima In part one of our series we spoke about the importance of good suspension which is probably the first major step…

I agree with you, taking out the rear sway bar and installing stiff as fuck rear springs is not the way to go. I can't imagine the front and rear balance being very good.
Wel thats whats funny. I went to bimmerforums looking for drift setup info and the ppl were rude as hell on tye thread i started. They told me my efforts were "pale" and that i wont drift without the $1500 coilover setup. I do agree that suspension is most important for drift but when they kept stressing i need to take out my rear sway, they totally lost me and they lost their credibility.haha
Then they told me i was dumb for thinking i could feel the difference in the way my car handled with a crossbrace. And that front and rear strut bars dont do anything, calling me even more silly if i think i can feel the difference.lol after that i kinda just stopped listening to anything those fools had to say.they were local guys too. pretty sad. I look up european sights mostly and use some basic tuning techniques the japs have been using forever. For example, front and rear strut bars.lol
Oh and when i said that on bikker forums they went crazy saying this isnt a nissan and that the suspension is different like i dont know that.haha
I guess they wanted me to just follow their setups and kiss up to them cause theyve been doing it for longer. One guy was like im teaching 2 other bmw's how to drift, they bought the same 1500 coilover kit as me, took out their rear sway and use like 1200# springs in rear.

I just laughed and said yea i can tell by the way the chassis flexes in the rear. No wonder why oinking drifts is soo difficult. But they told me go move to japan if u think they know what theyre doing. ignorant.

and i can tell u had no rear sway here.lol i drove my car with no rear sway for about 2 weeks right after changing my trailing arm and hated it. i had to find a welder to put the support tabs on the trailing arm before i put the bar back on. In the backroads the car handled mushy and entry was pretty scary the first corner i went into. I had kinda forgot and entered pretty quick. idk how ppl do it with no sway but u did pretty good man. came in quick. it was nice when u linked the left with the right
how long u been driftin for? definitely get some stiff custom rates and u will be better with just that
not really a slider. More about autox than anything, but the drift events are fun. Kinda like going to the dragstrip... lol

I've been doing autox for a while, but this year was my first real season with the car, it's all a learning process. I've had the e30 for about 2 years now, and been driving it at events(realistically) for about 1 to 1.5 years.

I did 1 drift event with stock suspension, and the weight transfer was difficult to do, and put me up on 2 wheels... (there's a video) then I did 2 more drift events with H&R race, the same setup as that video you just watched. The car needed a rear anti-sway, and more power. In the morning, before the quali run, it was easy to get the car sideways and link turns because the track was a bit damp, but as it dried up it was difficult to hold angle without going overboard and spinning. Now with a rear sway I imagine it would be a lot easier to slide, but 100hp and about the same torque to the wheels it's hard to use the throttle to slide the car. Like I said, in the rain, it's not hard to slide around some corners. :)

I think my car would slide a bit better now that it has a rear sway, here's me after getting suspension, and my first event driving with it. The car understeered a lot, as is the nature of the car, even with H&R race. Once the rear sway was added the car is much more neutral, with just a slight amount of oversteer in the high speed sections of autox(added a spoiler to fix this). Also, you might want to run a significant amount of toe out, I run about 2 degrees, it turns in very crisply.

My friend said he has 450/700 and he said hell take me for a little ride when the salts gone. its garaged for now.

I agree with you tho. it is a daily driven car so 700 should be fine. im still practicing with the HR sports, wish they were race springs, but its better than the old oem set up. much better. and these HD shocks work wonders. 550/700 i think is what im looking for. there arent too many drift e30's out here and the ones that are here keep telling me to take off my rear sway bar. i think thats stupid.lol their cars look to soft in the rear when they drift and they have like 1000lbs in the rear to "compensate" for no rear sway

im trying to post a vid of my car but im always driving by myself. id like to see how mushy it looks with these springs.haha

They're most likey 9" wide wheels. You probably measured from outside edge to outside edge. thats the incorrect way of measuring a wheel.

That aside, I'd love to see the car now with the new front arms. Your best bet for fenders up front is to cut them and use rivet on fenders flares. That's the only real way to run your setup correctly.

this, to a certain extent. You want the rear to be able to step out but you don't want it to snap, unless you absolutely love that.

I suggest that if you're looking for a setup before you know how to drift (or what setups will change what characteristics) i suggest you drift it stock, and then make the modifications. You won't learn as quick about setup or proper technique as compared to if you just went out and did it, then make adjustments.

I didnt read the rest of the thread but I this.^^

Drift it stock and learn some basics. Then add things as you go. It will take longer but it will make u better at driving your ca and not crash. As u add all these things the car reacts different and if u dont know what to expect cause u do it all at once it will be more difficult to learn.
I have also heard a lot about ppl taking off the sway. When I had no sway off the car felt grose! suuper flexy. Id suggest starting off with a sway and learning with it. u could even upgrade it to a vert rear sway. theyre oem and i think theyre 18mm
*Peep my build thread!lol I will need to buy the rear sway enforcement again but ill be okay till i get it.

real quick, I have the suspension technique sways. 22mm front, 19mm rear. I have just put on a IE front and rear strut bar(from member white325is), but ONE front strut bar was noticeable when i took it out.

I tried to use the Race Skids cross brace but that thing did its job too well. It kept the car wanting to go straight. When i snapped the rear out it would slide a sec and then the front would want to straighten the car out. not good. so i traded it for my rear sway. i havnt driven the car since but it should be a lil tighter.
I only have hr sport springs and bilstein HD shocks, so this is my weakness. What rates to run is the hard part IMO. Im trying to find something that works well with my sway bar set up. I like the way the car reacts now, but not the suspension.its almost there 22mm/19mm = what spring rates
    Any ideas??
