I just finished installing my 2.8 liter stroker into my 87 325is and upon taking it for a test drive I found that the steering is fucked up. I didn't fuck with the rack during the project, just disconnected the PS pump.
Before my new engine was installed the PS pump or the steering rack leaked, I'm not sure which one. The steering was fine but eventually the reservoir would run dry and I would have to drive w/o PS (not a big deal with the e30's bus wheel).
Now both of the hoses leading into the PS pump are leaking like sieves (probably my fault on the re-connect) but the steering is now way off. There is about 50 degrees of play in the steering and it seems like when I go to turn I have to overcome "humps." When I am turning the wheel does not go back to the center position after letting go, and sometimes it will want to go further than I want it to and I have to correct.
It wasn't like this before, but the car was up on jackstands for the last month or two so it might have to settle in? I honestly have no idea where to start as I just did a crash-course in engine install and that took awhile to get a hang of. . . I have yet to do anything suspension/steering related so I am kind of in the dark. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks.
