I just want something that is good on the street and sticky enough to have fun with. I lived my Dunlop starspecs and I wouldn't mind having those again if I can figure out the right size for them.

Starspecs are available in 205/50 15, there's a lot of good tires in that size but they will be 23" tall, as will 225/45. The only good 15" sizes that are 24" overall (stock OD) are the 205/55 and 225/50, both of which have pretty limited selection.

also, you really can't change the size of the contact patch. that's determined by the tire pressure and car's weight. the only thing you can really change is the shape (long and narrow, or short and wide). you might have more tire than you need (with the detriment of more weight and cost), but you'll never be able to make it have "less" contact area.

The article in GRM showed differently. I'm not a subscriber anymore so I can't link to it, but they showed the variances in contact patch. In their tests the larger tires went slower.
