e28 vs e34 fiancée daily driver

recently my fiancée 318i through a rod.
time to get her a new car and surprise she is pregnant now! so no more coupes time for a sedan!
E30 prices are way to inflated right now and id rather not spend what people are asking for for those.
so we are looking at getting either a e34 (525i touring) or e28 (528e).
i know the e34 has a weak coolant system and transmission so im kind of leaning towards e28. besides the timing belt on m20s i fell like it would be more reliable and better fit since she enjoyed her e30.

    what do you guys think?

She's having a baby dude...get her the safest and most reliable BMW you can afford (if that means no more BMW, then so be it!)

Yeah the 5.4 did that on some motors. I think am e34 is a safer car than the e30.

I just mentioned the Expedition because a friend of mine had his wife driving one 8 months pregnant and a seasoned citizen t-boned her at 55 mph. She was perfectly fine. That's a testimony.

wow, not bad. i actually wouldn't mind getting one, i just have no standard tools haha.

yeah i agree, an e30 is a great car but e34 i would imagine be safer in a accident than both e28 and e34

I would look at E39 or E60. Remember, your child is going to be riding in this thing. They are going to be safer (passive as well as active), and can be had in stick. Lots of idiots out there in their mondo SUVs.

My girlfriend rolls in a 94’ 540iA. She says she loves it, even more so than her moms 06 Audi S4… And I must say, the E34 really is a wonderful car. I wouldn't mind having one either. But like it was stated above you have a kid on the way. That should be priority number one. The E28, not a safe car in modern traffic. The E34 is safer, but not ideal. I would say look at an E39 or even maybe a E38 740i or 740iL. My mentality is the more metal between the driver and the crack head on the road the better.

E39 wagon, hands down best for safety/ the money. 540iTs aren't necessary because of the timing guides breaking and then you need a engine rebuild, and the maintenance. A nice 525iT or 528iT is perfect for a baby, quiet and spacious. Also nice for hauling a stroller easily. I bought my 2000 528iT for $1400. They are out there. Congrats on being a father!!

I second the e39 touring notion.

There is a decent looking black E34T for sale on CL with a manual conversion, might be a good start for you since it already has the trans swap taken care of
