Is a Techno Violet job more pricey because the door jambs and engine bay also need paint? Or is it the type of paint that’s applied?
i'm budgeting over 15k for an external respray. it may not be enough. there's a little work to do though.

15k for an external respray?? Is that not full inside and out paint money?

been quoted a minimum that is closer to 25k here for that. that's with me doing final assembly for trim etc. i'm also starting with a pretty clean car. things have gone expensive since covid. i'd also have to book close to a yr in advance. get a few quotes before you jump in too far.

it's way cheaper in the US but you get what you pay for. there are far more shops doing that type of work there. some of the shops i've checked out for body and paint are 200 - 300km away. the majority of shops now only do collision repair and they mostly will refuse a car if it is more than 10yrs old.

edit : the money for a body shop is in insurance repair. not restoration. restoration repair gets quite expensive.

It depends what car you are doing. A +100k rare collectible car can justify a 15-25k paint job but we are talking about an E30!!! That’s more than the average price of most E30 selling in Canada!

In Quebec or Ontario, I can get same job done for 5-6k cad if I bring the car with everything removed and re-install myself. One guy has a 1-2 year waiting list cause doing high end restoration but the other one can do job within reasonable delay and even cheaper.

It's all in the labor. The paint cost is trivial compared to the labor. $5-6k sounds quite low for a good color change, but paint is extremely variable in price. People will spend $10k+ on an external repaint by a talented painter for a show quality job, and I've seen $3,000 paint jobs that look great to me. Granted, it's 2023 now, that $3,000 paint job could be $5,000 today...

I hit up a shop that was recommended to me by another enthusiast.

They quoted me $4,200 for a sterling silver repaint with no engine bay or door jambs. Quoted me $5,300 if they change the color and do the engine bay and door jambs.

Single stage paints though, drastically more expensive for a 2 stage job. For the average Joe like me, single stage is probably good enough?

The more work you do yourself the better, materials themselves arent too bad, its the labor that costs the coin.. plus all the parts you find along the way to reassemble it. A complete colour change is A LOT of work. To do it properly you need to pull the car down to a rolling shell. A respray is 3/4 less work. Not to mention a full teardown requires more replacement parts that you find along the way= more.money

If you're convinced you will keep the car forever then do what you can to get it done. Chip away at it over time and it feels less expensive. This is why my cars taken 10 years to get it how i want. so i dont get divorced lol

5k doesn't even get you in the door here. i''ve been quoted 5k for a front bumper surround respray on an e39. by more than one shop.

that's pretty routine. more than one shop owner has told me it would cost about the asking price of a decent car.

i doubt you've checked recently. most quotes from shops doubled exactly over covid and they haven't come down.

Most shop here that do insurance jobs won’t even touch an E30. I can also get quotes above 10k here from most shops.

You need to find an enthusiast that has a small shop/low running cost vs a big shop with a lot of employees and expenses but that do quality job without cutting corners. Also, I am not talking about rust repair. And those quotes were given this winter, my 2006 E46 M3 Alpine White 6mt slicktop actually got resprayed by new owner. He will bring me the car back next week for VANOS bulletproofing so I will see the paint job quality myself as the painter is 4h way from Montreal.

precisely. that leaves a bit less than zero here. that's why i've increased my search in a 300km radius.

10k has become about minimum. maaco-y and less might get you 8k for respray 10 footer here.

non-existant now. we used to have a few. maybe not great numbers, half dozen or so, but they've all exited the industry, or gone high end full resto charge or nothing. it's a fairly recent thing, began pre-covid really, but that just sealed it.

it's not all bleak. i have few leads, but it's still gonna be at least in the high teens low 20's. and i have to factor some rust repair in a rear wheel well. i got the jack repair to do.

it's quite a bit newer than an 89 e30, it should have been much easier or there's other issues.

The body of my 1991 318is is in better shape that 2006 E46 M3 cause it was a California car vs the M3 that was in the rust belt/Quebec salt all it’s life. It was actually daily driven all year long during 12 years… So doesn’t matter if you bring an E30 or E46 to a body shop.

But what is so special about your 1989 E30 to drop 20k in a paint job on it??? You can get clean E30 with original paint for pretty much same price
