My X5 is excellent. I have the 3.0 liter and have had it for 5 years now. We've put a few grand into it in the last 3 years, but nothing that has killed me yet. i love it for a DD. It doesn't feel like a truck.

X5s are very well put together - it's the X3s that suck.

3.0 manual though. Wife drives a 2.5 and when we drove up to Washington through the mountains with a cargo hatch full still never felt like it was straining.

I owned an '02 X5 4.4i for just over a year. Of all the BMW's I have owned, I seriously regret having to sell it at the time-it was my definite favorite. Parts are a bit on the high side and running premium unleaded during the summer when gas prices shoot up gets very expensive, but they don't drive like an SUV. Power is really good, handling is excellent for a larger vehicle, and it has a lot of room inside.

    I hate SUV's, but I would own another X5 in a heartbeat.

The rest of the world manages to tow heavy shit without buying SUVs and pickups.

The 3.0L is actually more reliable of the bunch.

I had one for 6 months, sold it in the spring.
Great truck, just not for me, great for driving or lugging things around, but when i was driving alone i felt bored, so I still drove the e30 in the winter.

has a enormous tank which is awesome, but not on your wallet. The X5 doesn't feel like a SUV when you drive it. They are great and have alot of space.
