I would seriously consider a Subaru Wagon. I have a 95 Legacy L, manual, awd, abs, etc that is simply unstoppable in the snow. It carries a ton, is wicked fun to drive when suitably modded (suspension, it's still slow), and is incredibly useful and pleasant for a DD. It isn't fast, but you can easily swap an STI or WRX motor in. I've toyed with selling mine in the past but I just can't bring myself to sell it, I like the car too much.

An E34 wagon would also be nice, but they don't have awd. In ski country, the AWD is actually justified.

My family has had three successive Subaru wagons and BMWs in Colorado, so I definitely can speak for their snow abilities. The 07 Subaru we had got sold off quick, as it was too big on the outside but had less interior room than my 95. My parents sold it, then bought themselves an 04 which is a very competent car. It + trailer = amazing utility. The 07 Outback I have no snow experience in, as it got sold really quickly after purchase. The 04 Outback is a lot like mine in snow, but to me is a lot less fun to drive. It is a more comfortable car for DD, but it just is missing something to me.

My 95 has never let me down, and in the five years I have owned it I have never had anything fail on it....it's absurdly reliable. It has only been in the shop for a broken heater core which seems to be a thing on those models. I would be very surprised if any audi or bmw wagon would be as reliable, though they would be more fun for sure.

Compared to a rwd BMW with LSDs, studded winter tires, and sandbags, my Subaru on auto-x'd all seasons was unstoppable in the snow. Add the studded tires on the scoob, and it would climb up a wall. I can't recommend one enough, especially at the current $2k beater price for most. My brother has an e46 325i (non awd) wagon that is decent, but has no LSD and actually sucks on my parents' gravel driveway, let alone snow. Growing up, we took dad's e28 535i skiing quite often, but it isn't comparable to the scoobs. Ski country is Subaru country; there's a reason for it.

I can see the difference. However, the thread is about a guy looking for a new car for his mom (correct me if I am wrong). An impreza hatchback isn't exactly a bad idea. My mom went from a V70 to the new A3, once she test drove it she decided that it had plenty of room for her needs.

If you can't see the difference between the Impreza hatchback and the Legacy wagon you posted, you need some learnin. The Impreza is NOT a wagon. Period. It is a 5 door hatchback.
