Unfortunately, I cannot claim experience swapping late motors to early doors. I know it is do-able, but cannot offer advice.
If you do it, post some pics! I do have a set of late regulators sitting around, and the (early) ones that are in my doors now are dead slow. I dread swapping them AGAIN, for like the 4th time, unless I go late model. For now, mine work.
early vs. late - power window motors/regulators??

Is there fabrication involved in switching, or does the entire system swap over if you do it complete? The door cut-outs & holes appear the same at first glance.Leave a comment:

Thanks for the comment. Would prefer to fix this today, not have to go find/order another early motor.
How does the actual glass release from the late regulator track? I dn't see any bolts. Where the glass sits in the channel on the two locations, just see two tiny holes drilled inthe aluminum channel, appearing to hold clipsLeave a comment:

No fucking way. Get your fab skills out, do something better.Early and late are different, the motors have different splines. Also the early design is a cork screw type inside a rail that spins where the late design has arms that pivot off each other. (seta is early design).
Best bet is to grab a used early and use that. I would suggest getting 2 of them because my car has gone through 3 of them on the passenger side. I'd take the rail out and clean then re-lube it to reduce any friction for the motor.
The early design is shit: in fact, I bet your motor is OK, but the damn hub wears on the worm drive crap and binds so bad it can't move, faking a dead motor.
Ask me how I know...
IF you have the chops, swap to the late mechanism. Much smoother, quieter, quicker. My '87 will get late doors before paint...even though I have the chops to swap, I choose to have it appear factory.
Late door panels, too, IMO.
GL!

early vs. late - power window motors/regulators??
OK. I have searched, both here and on Google. I have the Bentley. And I still need some pointers... Please.
86 es, passenger power window doesn't operate. 91 325i parts car with good window operation. I have both door cards off. I have 12v to the motor of the 86, so I'm pointed towards the motor being defective.
With both door cards off, there is obviously an early & late system of regulator/motor mounting. What is the best approach? Swap out the entire
regulator system? (I'd lose the optional hex-key cranking sytem) Are the motors the same/interchangeable, even though they are mounted differently? Should I pull 86 motor and try to clean up the internals?
Any advise (or point me towards applicable threads) appreciated.Tags: None
