Thank you for asking this and answering this. Ive been asking everyone with an 02 this. Cuz I have my e30, which i was building a 2.9T m20 for, but now its going into this!!!You know how the E30 feels more hands on compared to newer cars? Think of people feeling that way about the 2002 when the E30 was the "new car". It doesn't feel loose, just more mechanical (not too different than how a gtv or 510 feels).
When I bought my 2002 it was a one way ticket up to Seattle, spent 2 weeks driving it down highway one (oh that pre-marriage freedom). At the time the car had stock 40 year old suspension, so it felt pretty loose.

Unfortunately. It no longer looks like this, this was under my friends ownership. He has since stripped it because he had a little too much fun with the welded 4.10 in it.
Heres current condition. But will be revived into a street/track monster.

I've yet to drive an 02. and plan on having a 400hp one. So I'd really appreciate it if someone in Bay Area, CA would let me drive. I'll trade ya? U can drive my e30? lol if thats anything specialLast edited by 88SuperETABD; 08-01-2014, 05:08 PM.Leave a comment:

I'd say it's very like an E30, at least similar to my 318i. There was a real sense of historical appreciation when I drove mine back from buying it after essentially adding oil and pumping up the tires. I could easily feel exactly how the design mentality of 2002 led to the E30. Many of the sightlines are similar, the shifter, and suspension very similar to an E30.
Not only that, but the car got two waves and thumbs up during a ~15 mile drive! Clearly 2002s get some love from the general public!

Ah, thanks. I've never seen one on, makes sense.
General question for everyone -
Y'know when you've had a favorite car for many many years, and everyone else wants one too, and it becomes an icon over time?
So, you still want it, but you've never actually sat in it or driven one.
Most of those cars eventually get way out of reach so it doesn't matter.
I bought a nice Alfa back when it was just an old used sports car - no big deal, not too expensive. I've always loved the driving position, wheel, shifter, cockpit, feel, sound….. everything about it. A bit hard to see out of with the top up, but who cares.
What if you finally get to sit in your mythical icon car, and it's a disappointment? Is the wheel weird and way too high? Are the seats goofy and too upright? Are the mirrors impossible to see out of? Is the motor rattlely and has no torque?
What was it like to drive a 2002 / 1600 for the first time? What's it like compared to an E30?
rulez…

My own. Front end needs to be another inch lower, then I'll be happy. May have to go coilovers.
