no worries ironman30, i was pretty sure this thread would bring out the off-road enthusiasts on r3v, and it sure did. i know passions run high when it comes to all kinds of auto manufacturers, so a land rover topic in general discussion is sure to spark some conversation. i'm happy to see other people share my interest in the subject. at least it hasn't degenerated into cursing and name calling, you fuckers. ;)

i have spent plenty of time in jeeps and other 4x4's as well, no doubt they all can be built into capable machines, they're just aimed at different strata of the car buying public.

Good post, sounds like you had a lot of fun. Offroading is one of my favorite hobbies. I am not a one car or one truck kind of a guy but I had to stick up for the poor old Heep. It is neat that RR put a lot of design ideas into their early models trucks that were later adopted by most all of the capable rigs like lockers and coil spring 4 link suspension.

RR by Land Rover....

I've had two...

My first was an 87 RR. First year brought over to the US.

Basically, if it wasn't visibly rusting, you didn't look hard enough, and if it wasn't leaking oil, it had to be out of oil somewhere.

Alum body on iron frame.... designed to corrode.

I remember adding up all the $$ I had spent trying to bring the 87 up to snuff, suspension bits, fixing this and that, replacing a whole rear window-hatch (what a crappy design that was), fixing blown cats and exhaust leaks on the headers... man, it was work.... when I averaged it out over a year or two, I saw it was cheaper to lease a Lux stretch version of the same that was literally 7 years more current, and this would have been a 3 year old vehicle! Enter.....

My second was a 94 LWB lease of a used RR.... with electric suspension, beautiful leather interior, awesome sunroof, heated seats, just wonderful. The back seat had so much leg room it, it exheeds a 740iL even.....

BEAT THE CRAP OUT OF BOTH OF THEM!

I did the full off roading stuff with both, had ARB brush bar with built in winch mounted on front, and a second one I had could be mounted in the rear tow-hitch...Roof rack, heavy duty jacks and straps etc... Carried portable compressor to air down for the sand too. Just amazing to go through water that was up over the doors, stay dry, and see the exhaust burbling up while under water..... course, you wouldn't want the engine to fail like that... literally crawled out a window once to throw a line to help get out of one mess....Had fastened it to the ARB in advance, knowing it was a tough hole..

The articulation on those old boxy ones was simply incredible, for rock crawling, inclines, and rough pathways, or lack of pathways they were simply incredible vehicles, and just a ton-o-fun.

I learned how to wrench on the first one, couldn't afford dealer parts and labor.....

Some wonderful memories... Snow was just a blast, for all intents and purposes, you could not get stuck... used to pull tons of people back onto the road.

But, it really pays to be handy, that is for sure. Can't say anything for the models that followed the "boxy" ones..... very $$ by that point.

I'd kill for a clean 110.... sweeeeet.

LOL, I will give you a beep as I drive by you in my Jeep while you push your Range Rover down the road. A British made vehicle that BMW tried to fix and finally gave up on...

I disagree cost of the build of a vehicle directly has to do with options and quality of the product but we can agree to disagree on this point

As far as your comment "there are gizmos and gadgets that a rover has that jeeps don't..." The Jeep Rubicon has had lockers front and rear since 2003 at less than half the cost of the RR.

I respect the capabilities of the RR with lockers and 4 link suspension, so don't get me wrong. But, I have had lots of fun in my Jeep and Land Cruiser without being stranded on the side of the road or more importantly off the road by either one. Range Rovers are for the rich folks. ;)

Out of every one I know that has either a rover or a jeep, the guy with the jeeps spend far more time fixing and working on them than the rovers.

Yes New rovers are for the more affluent, and thats part of why most people dont think of them as true bush capable rigs, as normally you only see them in the urban jungle where they only have to scale a curb or a speed bump once in a while or drive on a wet lawn. Most people that have the New ones dont take them out in the field because they didnt buy them for that reason, most buy them for My SUV cost MORE than yours did, this dose not change the capabilities for the bush that have been built into them.

And you can buy really nice Discos and RR and RRc for the same or less than a similar year TJ or XJ (yes there are some you find that are More) but over all they are running about the same prices.

Still rather be caught pushing a rover than driving a jeep. I have got plenty of seat time in jeeps of all kinds and I hate nearly all of them, I hate Chrysler products in general.

As far as MSRP Comapros Vettes are always compared to the other far more expensive supper cars, they are similar in performance but but there are compromises to get the prices down this is just the opposite.

Stock for stock for similar sized and powered vehicles = Apples to Apples MSRP really has nothing to do with the ability of whats going on off the pavement.

The interior of a loaded Jeep is now where near that of a rover with NO options (there are only a couple) , there are many gizmos and gadgets that a rover has that jeeps dont. Like the new ones have locking diffs front and rear.

But yes I will agree 80k on a rover is a bit over the top for a SUV but look at the new 10 Grand Cherokee's and Comanders are nearly 43k and New GM full size SUV's are 50-60+k. So really whats your point about the MSRP, its Like Buying a Loaded 7series over a loaded out Caddy STS or DTS. You pay for more LUX and refinement over the cheaper alternatives.

It's just not fair for you to compare one stock vehicle that costs nearly $83K to another stock vehicle that costs around $30K. If you spent even $30K on the Jeep which would still be $23K under the RR and it would be far superior to the Range Rover. Let's compare apples with apples guys. JMTCW

I've owned 3 jeeps (87 cherokee, 99 XJ, 68 Jeepster commando) and one range rover classic (89) and out of the 4 of them, i'd pick my rover... even though it's had the most mechanical problems (gotta get the block out now to have a crack welded).

That looks like a blast, its nice to see that the new ones are still fairly capable off the pavement, and not just sold to become pavement pounders with the rover name on it.

Definitely, they're still tough as nails when the road gets less travelled.
