BMW created the most silky smooth 6 cylnder motors in the late 1960s. That's 50 years of evolution. The M50 and N50 are great motors, but they are... long. The best way to make a car handle is to have the motor as short as possible and as far back as possible. Which is better with a four than a six. The word of the day in motors is efficiency. The turbo four might not be as smooth as the previous six, but I am sure it will have as much torque (if not more) and will be more efficient. BMW won the 1969 ETCC with a 2002Tik (turbo), then won the 1984 F1 championship with a turbo four. Did anyone forget about the e21 Flying Bricks with monster turbo motors? I have been longing for a very long time for the return of a turbo four. Thanks BMW.

BMW dumps the 6 for turbo 4's

BMW can do whatever they want in my book, so long as they stay away from the V6 in production vehicles...Leave a comment:

not opposed to 4s but it's tough to match the smoothness of a 6.. not opposed to turbos but bmw had better make them reliable and no oil temp issues and limp mode please.Leave a comment:

Thanks for the correstion... Ls is what I ment and wanted to say..
I have dumbass tendances...
I think It would be a tough sale to most of chevys follower if they dumped
the fundomental "V8"
It would be like Harley-Davidson dumping the aircooled v-twin
I was just thinking that so many people who buy bmw love the I6 and would find it hard to beleave bmw would turn it's back on the mighty motor..
Have i gone far enough off track/ subject... I lovez me Jack-n-coke... lolLeave a comment:

Exactly. There's a reason BMW's headquarters in Munich is shaped like, what else? Four cylinders.

I've been waiting years for BMW to get serious about 4 cylinders again. Maybe a new One Series is in my future after all...Leave a comment:

There's a reason that the BMW headquarters in Munchen is a Four-Cylender building. BMW wouldn't exist as we know it without the M10 series four-banger.
Like others have said, I doubt the I-6 is going anywhere soon. It'd be hard to pass-off a 4-cylender 5er to the public.Leave a comment:

assuming they do a good job i don't see a problem. Im sure the 6s wont be discontinued any time soon.Leave a comment:

This is actually really cool!
F1 is changing back to turbo 4's as well, maybe we will see a 2002 successor!Leave a comment:

Chevy hasn't used an lt motor since the late 90's, and the LS motors are only available in the higher end cars and/or in Most SUV's. It isn't really the same.Leave a comment:

No that would be like chevy getting rid of the LT? motors.
I dought they'll just drop the 6I motor all together..Leave a comment:

It doesn't suck, 4 cylinders were the root of bmw's in the first place. I am all for this idea, as long as they prove that these engines are more reliable and easier to maintain than vw turbo engines, these will do very well.Leave a comment:
