Learning From The Past & Moving Forward

We were all taken in to varying degrees by a guy who appears to have money and who loves to show off.

I may be still new here, but I think we should discuss recent events in the hope that we may work a few things out and learn a few lessons together.

First, a few questions for everyone:

This guy was revered by some and respected by many... and for what?

Did this guy ever actually help other members of the communities he was a part of? Did he answer questions others had about their cars? Did he help others with their problems? Did he contribute knowledge? Does having more money and nicer cars than others really put someone ahead here in terms of personal stature or worth? Having the drive and ability to earn the money to untake big projects is certainly something I aspire to, but once I achieve that aim will I really have become a better person for it?

Why did he participate in these communities, and what did he gain from it?

Why did so many of us who knew his true nature keep the information to ourselves until many others were taken in by him?

Second, some of my comments on the two specific threads recently posted:

I read this entire thread, and the first post is incredibly well presented to the point where any objective reader can learn everything they need to from it to pass solid judgment.

The reaction of this community (and the moderation team and forum owner) is to be commended - and I strongly believe that this reaction should be compared with other communities as an instructive look at their true nature.

I read this entire thread as well, and I must say it's a complete mess and an incredibly frustrating read. With the original point being to draw out more lies from the accused it did nothing but make the thread poster look bad and annoy those of us trying to make sense of the situation until (still reasonably poor and unorganized) evidence was finally added.

A chain of posts buried within the thread needs to be repeated here:

Almost makes you want to go to the body shop!

    by mschweber at Citysearch

In the several times I have needed to deal with Young's (all situations where insurance was not in play) I have always found Bob Young to be extremely pleasant to deal with, his price fair and his work good. Most important to me, I have never felt that he pushes any work that is not needed. I had a problem with a bumper. One shop (associated with the dealer where I had bought the car) wanted to do all kinds of work and gave me an estimate of over $500. Bob looked at the car, gave me an estimate of under $100, then apologized when the final bill was $3 over the estimate because of a change in the parts cost. The work looks great - good as new.
Pros: Have always been treated fairly
    Cons: None

This is Vlad's? Who is Bob Young, a previous owner?

And finally, to quote directly from the shop website:

Established in 1972 by owner Donald B. Young...
I think it's entirely possible this hypothesis might be accurate to some degree, though until others come forward with their knowledge (or someone calls the shop and asks to speak with the owner) we won't be able to confirm it either way.

What are your thoughts everyone? :)
