As mentioned above: M5board.com has a wealth of info.
Buy one built after 9/01 if you can, this will have all the mechanical updates for the S62.
Cooling system isn't any worse then any other newer BMW. Plastic parts wear and break down. So far I've only had to do my water pump due to a leak, but I plan on a full change out when it hits 100k.
I've owned mine for the past 6 years and over 40k, mostly daily driven. The Cam Position Sensors are what likes to go out on mine. Replaced all of them at least once ;) Luckily, the last round was an "updated" part and I havent' had any issues for the least year or two with them.Leave a comment:

they are cool and fun to drive, but be ready to buy a pair of AFMs- and damn they're expensiveLeave a comment:

all e39's have that little cooling problem issue. We just went through the ringer with my dads. Doing the work yourself could clearly save money but it was at the shop every other week for about 2 months with cooling system BS. His 540I sport is just sick. It handles awesome has good power is comfy. Win all over an e39.Leave a comment:

Wow, two E39 threads in one day!
As far as I'm aware the E46 M3 and the E39 M5 share few parts, so it's an apples to oranges comparison. In addition to M5board.com referenced above, you can find a wealth of info on E39s here: http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=103Leave a comment:
