Yup, sounds about right. Check starter relay, ignition switch (not tumbler), immobilizer if applicable, and or wiring to starter from switch and to starter from battery. Sounds like nss is operating and ignition switch is on the fritz. -
Grounds. My ix did that twice. Very intermittent. Then I tightened down the battery (-) like I should have when I put the new battery in. Fixed.Leave a comment:

So, got some more info and I think I've got this thing nipped in the bud.
She called yesterday and said the "X" on the dash flashed when the car wouldn't start, but was off when it would. Apparently this is the immobilizer.
Apparently you can reset the key by locking and unlocking it 5 times.
Apparently the "antenna ring" in the ignition switch will go bad and not recognize the key, thus no start. Good thing is it can be replaced w/out needing programmed to the car.
Apparently the key can lose coding and have to be reprogrammed or replaced. This is a dealer only thing.
Hoping the key reset trick works as I don't want to tear into the dash and do bullshit. If that doesn't fix it, the "antenna ring" is like $40 from the dealer. After that, she's off to the dealer for a new key.
Volvo.....ugh.
So, thankfully that little tidbit pretty much solved the problem. I would have torn the whole fucking car apart looking, cleaning, replacing shit. Never even saw the immobilizer mentioned in my searched for S40 no starts. Go figure.Leave a comment:

Didn't Volvo have IP address's for parts on their cars? IE you had to go into the computer and tell it to recognize this part vs the old part.Leave a comment:

Didn't get a chance to look at it yet. I was going to load a gun and shoot myself, but decided to work on a Ford Tempo instead. Should have done the latter.
Thanks for the suggestions. Like I said, I'm completely unfamiliar with these, eh, turds.Leave a comment:

So get out a test light and go from there???
Can you "jump" the starter and bypass other wiring like on an e30. Thats the first thing I would doLeave a comment:

If the relays are good, you may just want to check and clean the connections to the starter. Mine had too much corrosion to get a good connection and would only work after toggling the ignition switch a few times or wiggling the wires a bit. After a week of this starting bullshit, I disconnected them and sanded them and haven't had a problem since. But this is on my e30...Leave a comment:

I always assumed if an XC90 had a problem you just replace the transmission?
Guess not.Leave a comment:
