I did ask him before I assembled the engine the first time why the rings he sent me weren't exactly like the ones I sent him, he told me it was fine, and with me trusting him and not knowing enough to argue I went along with it.Leave a comment:

What don't you get?
Your motor smoked bc it wasn't put together correctly right?
That won't happen again, right?
In hindsight, when something seems wrong, it most likely is. Instead of listening to a guy you don't know and have no reason to trust, ask people like
Nando
Jim
Josh
Matt
Lorin
Shant
They can't figure out what's wrong with your already assembled motor on here no matter what you post. If you asked the question before you assembled your parts, this could have been avoided right?Leave a comment:

I don't understand you del. Haha.
Exhaust is Stromung E36 M3 and E36 OBDII midpipe with the "shorty" Raceland headers. Now to build an actual intake for it.Leave a comment:

Agreed, but there are many different configurations and dummies out there. He was likely either mis communicating, or willing to risk it.Leave a comment:

Seller shouldn't make a mistake like that, especially when they're specialized in rings.
They know real well that this can happen and how much time/money is lost.Leave a comment:

So wait, I need cliffs now.I'm glad my thread helped others out. It was definitely a learning process for me and you very quickly realize how many people don't know as much as they think when it comes to fine tuning and precision troubleshooting. I used to think my a close friend of mine was a Master Mechanic until we started troubleshooting this issue.
Didn't your ring gyp you a ring per piston?
I wouldn't be able to tell that without taking the motor apart either. Even a compression test could/would yield proper numbers.
At the risk of sounding like a dick, and trust me, I'm not trying to, if I was sent a ring set and the oil ring had the spring and one ring, I would ask way more than just the shipper.
That being said, I have some builds under my belt. Not a mistake that will happen on your next build I am sure. Car sounds great, lets see some pics.
Ps, I understand your block was fine. I was applying your initial situation to other builds. In other builds it could have been the block. Builders need to be sure that their machinist does proper work.Leave a comment:

Soooo 4 rings.This isn't necessarily true...
The top ring or compression ring can just be a standard flat ring like mine was with no top or bottom.
The second ring or scraper ring from my experience always has an edge to it that must be positioned to scrape oil off the cylinder walls into the crankcase.
And the third ring or oil control ring can either be a two piece or three piece design as commonly seen. Mine was the two piece design as shown but was missing the inner tensioning spring the first time.

I will try and get a video sometime soon. I should really upload some pictures from the engine bay shave. I'll get on thatLeave a comment:

I'm super pumped for you man
Has anyone else ever sliced their fingers open on piston rings? lol last time i put rings on a piston i forgot to wear gloves and sliced the shit out of all 5 fingers on my left hand... so stupid, next time i build a motor i'll be sure to remember the gloves and this thread just in case haha
got any videos of the car running? that would complete this threadLeave a comment:

Seems strange they would say that the spring tensioner isn't needed. Why would it be part of the set if it wasn't needed. Sounds like he was trying to blow smoke up your shorts. Happy to hear you got it sorted.Leave a comment:

Also, just got off the phone with Frank at Deves Piston Rings and they will be issuing me a full refund.
But I will never be doing business with him again. He even went as far as to say that the 2 piece oil control ring doesn't even need the spring tensioner so it didn't matter that I wasn't sent them on the first shipment from him...very bad customer service.Leave a comment:
