I like them as well, but were they popular when they were new? I'm sure they sold well but were they popular as anything other then a daily driver/econo box? What would make someone want to buy one and never drive it?
I know of their recent popularity but I know nothing of their history.
EDIT: Ok so I just read the above post as well as Wikipedia saying "During its production life, the AE86 was a popular choice for showroom stock, Group A, and Group N racing, especially in rallying and circuit races" and it goes on to say they were very competitive.
I had no idea about this but it makes a little more sense now...Last edited by defaultName; 01-21-2013, 11:35 AM.Leave a comment:

Not knowing who the owner is doesn't help. Maybe he was on the design team or raced them in 80's in WRC or some other method. Needless to say it didn't cost him much if memory serves me they were what 11-16K which was on par for a typical hot hatch from Japan or Germany.Leave a comment:

the AE86 is a neat/unique car though. Obviously something stood out at the time. I think actually a standard E30 convertable makes even less sense to store as a bubble car.Leave a comment:

That's what I'm wondering too. I can understand doing that with a car that is rare or one that would obviously be sought after in the future, but not a Corolla.Leave a comment:

Funny I felt that way about AE86's then. Granted it has a fun drivetrain but damn the Japanese interiors has always been so horrible. Hate the look and feel of them.
Neat car but is it truly going to be worth anything? Only to a collector as it's a mass produced car, too many were built so we know the story.Leave a comment:

I wonder what his thought process was with that toyota, no way of ever telling what will be valuable in the future. So insane, I doubt I could do that.Leave a comment:

Imagine someone buying a Corolla today and never driving it. In 25 years he would probably just be laughed at!Leave a comment:
