    I have been working in and around bmw's for about 20 years now and it doesnt make a difference if its a 4/6/8 cylinder engine they all grenade at one time or another at no certain mileage. V12's are just a P.O.S thats why i didnt include them in this.

    M42 M44 /M20 2.5/2.7 /M30 3.2 3.5 /M50 2.3 2.5 2.8 / S50 S52 ETC ETC ETC will not make it to one million miles either.

    I don't think having to fix the Timing chains/cam gears/tensioner, 180* thrust bearings and profile gaskets when they fail are considered routine maintenance. I doubt a M42 would make it one million miles.

    M42's are getting a bad wrap ? I ran a 2:12 on CALI SPEEDWAY 2.8 mile roval course with stock motor 91 318is gutted w/chip and k&n air filter and suspension mods.You can still have fun with them on the track. I agree they are harder to find than a 325e/325i. Go mod crazy on those cars,if the motor lets go you can get a 92 to 95 m42 motor and put it in no problem. It has the same block/head/valve cover and header. I say if you find a e30 m42 coupe keep it that way.

    tl;dr, non-tired POS M42's are as fast as a B25, but the power band is completely different. The feel is completely different. I've owned many a 6'er E30 including a M50 swapped one, and only 2 M42's, and by far my M42 E30 is much more fun and enjoyable. but that's because I like easy-to-toss cars.
    I'm only here for news on this. What gearing did you say you had?
