joey will definitely lose, bcuz auto.
but even then im sure dk would win because nice m42 with ITBs iirc.
both m20 and m42 are pretty outdated engines compared to modern times, m42 has more valves and less weight which in my book is a win when being modified for power/weight.
not only that but m42's have more engine bay space for tarbo charging. and ive never heard of an m20 being SC'd.
with that being said id much rather have a bad ass m20, because i dont care about going around a corner fast, i care about having fun getting to the corner and trying to kill some tires on the corner.
wtf is up with m42swaps?

I likewise. This is obviously a heated debate that can easily be ended by simply running a 318is and 325is together and seeing which one is faster. Not for cash, bragging, honeys, or pinks, but for SCIENCE!
Brandon was referencing a previous "A+" thread on r3v.. Can't seem to find it thoughLeave a comment:

This.
If you need to swap an M42, your driving the car wrong. I used to drive an M40 powered wagon (105hp, heavy shell) and had smiles every day.
I would love to tinker with an M42... it's pretty much a 2/3rd's M50. stick an M47 crank, S50 rods and pistons making 2.1L. The euro S50 itb's fit up to the head nicely, seams like a fun little motor.Leave a comment:

That's not necessarily true: m42s have a much nimbler turn-in and feel more composed in corners. Some m42s outperform m20 cars on the track simply because of this fact. Performance wise, that is the only thing the m42 has over the m20. However, straight "on-paper" performance like speed and acceleration is yielded to the m20.^
and I am trying to say... M42 is not any better in any way. o.k. except maybe sport seats and a black headliner. cornering is VERY debatable, esp. if your still running a 25y/o suspension, and choice of tires too. 2 hours of work, and your M20 car handles just as good in corners and has 40hp more.
You poor m42 guys just won't admit it thoughLeave a comment:

There is nothing wrong with a timing belt, takes no time for an experienced mechanic to do the timing belt, wp and tensioner. The m20 is simple, less things to go wrong. M42 has tappets and profile gasket failures that BOTH alone take more time than adjusting the valves and everything else you mentioned.Last edited by F34R; 03-03-2013, 01:16 AM.Leave a comment:

I'm not saying one is better. I'm saying they're basically the same. If you're going to keep the factory engine, pick your poison (like I did)- a little more power, or a little more corner speed. Pretty simple.Leave a comment:

All I'm getting at is the ignorance that people believe stock for stock 0-60 m42 is faster than m20. There is no way in hell that is possible.
That being said, I would more readably swap an m20 car than an m42 car because the m20 is so dang heavy and doesn't have a power output to justify its weightLeave a comment:
