New shocks work well, even on an incline (front on ramps, etc). Stabilus is the OE supplier I believe, you can get them at O'Reillys or many parts stores.

Mine stands up fine other than when I occasionally think I'll be fine to move the car from the garage to the driveway with the hood open (backing up) in which case it's also perfectly fine until I stop. So yes, a brand new shock should hold it up fairly well.

Has anyone bought a new one? I wonder if the new one is even strong enough to withstand a "light breeze". The hoods damn near decapitated me numerous times.

A wooden stick I found in the garage works perfectly tho :) haha

had my hood fall and hit me with the hinge on the shoulder blade today. It was wack
