As someone who is 17, I can see very easily how this happened. To quote my auto shop teacher, "If I gave most kids an anvil and told them that they couldn't break it, it would be broken in two in an hour." Most people my age drive like idiots (ok, maybe they just are idiots). Anyway, the easiest solution here is to teach them how to drive a high performance vehicle properly. I get tired of guys saying that stuff like this happens just because of age. There are plenty of people much older than me that can't drive a performance vehicle, much less a normal vehicle, properly.

However, the stereotype (and stupid insurance costs) were conceived for a reason. After all, the donor for my 24v swap setting outside was spun backwards into a pole by someone who was 17.

My kid will dream of having my e30 as his first car. Then when the day comes I'll pull mine back out of the driveway and on the other side will be a m10 car.

My dad bought me a 79 Datsun 310 when I was 17 years old. It was incredibly slow. And by "my dad bought me a datsun" I mean I saved $400 and bought myself a Datsun. My kids will have e30s with m42 motors. I think. I've got 12 years to collect three more e30s. Doable.

That really sucks...although I can't get on the "kids shouldn't have classics!" bandwagon, having bought a '74 when I was 20.

well to speak for myself, I'm 17 and I pretty much take care of my e30 better than I take care of myself sometimes lol. I'm the kind of kid who doesnt like it when my friends tap their fingers on my door handles to whatever song's on the radio.

True. Dad and I built a Spitfire when I was 15. Best first car ever because it was virtually unable to go fast enough to cause any trouble. I think that's how most first cars should be, in one way or another.
