Trust me, I've done this a few times. LOL.

Don't even think this is worth it anymore. It would be a shame to know a perfectly good e30 got scrapped because of it. That's why I'm trying to save it.

The "owner" right now has to register it in his name because his name is on the back of the title. If you took the title in with just the bill of sale it can go two ways either you'll luck out and dmv will work with you to register it or they'll tell you that you need to have the current owner register it and pay the back fees.

btw if your getting this for cheap just hop on it cheap e30's are becoming harder to come by because stance tax.

The title won't tell you if the car is on non-op or not, but the registration do.

If the title is not under his name he can not do any changes to the car. The previous owner might have put it on non-op before he sold it to him. You can check the car's current status online. If it is on non-op, you can transfer the car to your name without a smog.

Suggestions on how to proceed? CA DMV issues.

Currently own an 87 Alpine 325. For a few years I've seen an 89 bronzit 325i sitting at a local gas station. Got in touch with the owner. He's willing to sell it for cheap because the service station wants it gone.

Current "owner" purchased the car from a girl back in 2009. He claimed to have the title. In reality, he had the PO's title, with his name written in pen on the back as the buyer. Claims he registered it non-op. If it was non-op, in his name, should he have a title from the Dmv stating so? My options are-

    1. Wait for this flake to put money out of his own pocket to properly register and sell this car to me.

    2. Try and get a bill of sale from this guy, bring the old title to Dmv and do it myself.

    3. Lowball him because he didn't get it registered in his name in over 5 years, while the possible DMV charges have piled up.. Saying forget the title, bring car to my house, part it out and scrap the rest. (It's in pretty good condition, needs injector seals.)

    4. Forget it all and keep looking.

    Car in question.
