By pulling build sheets.
About 90% of those CKD cars are in fact South African. However, some were built in Malaysia and France.
Some countries have high taxes on foreign cars. To avoid being taxed, some manufacturers set up assembling factories in those countries. Manufacturer ships parts and then local workers assemble a car for the local market. BMW does/did it in a number of countries.(Egypt, Russia, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, China, Brazil) Most of the time manufacturers don't even own the factory, but outsource it to another company. For example, some BMWs for the Russian market are built at the same factory as Chevrolets, Kias and Hyundais.

here "knowck down kit" as it relates to BMW and other car makers:
Most of these kits were in relation to the boycott of South African made products due to apartheid.
As I understand it, there were companies who didn't wan't anything to do with BMW in the Apartheid years.
SA sourced a company who would provide them with an Italian made body (Glas) and then use the
powertrain from BMW and marry the two together for the SA market. Only SA was the only country
to build BMW's and MB's outside of Germany.
Volvo was another company who withdrew
from SA during these years, but nobody wanted anything from a Volvo lol
Here's some leisure reading for those interested in BMW's place in SA
Here's what a BMW 1800SA and 2000SA looked like.
Really homely looking things!Last edited by Stanley Rockafella; 01-03-2016, 06:08 PM.Leave a comment:

This is a better explanation of the whole thing than I could summarize:
Actually kinda surprised there is an article on this.
I thought a lot of South African BMWs were assembled in such a manner, but they have had a plant there since '68, so I'm not really sure.Leave a comment:

You seem to know what you are talking about, where did you get that info? And thanks for the breakdown.
Had no clue they did any sort of knock-down with E30s. South Africa I imagine?Last edited by Vincent Brick; 01-02-2016, 11:03 PM.Leave a comment:

Yes, they are.
Keep in mind, this is a breakdown by production dates, not model years.
There were 9 US-spec 318is that were built in 1989. 4 were sold to the public. 2 to Canada, 2 to US. Out of those 4 cars, only 1 car is still on the road in Canada.

92 verts aren't a plenty, so that's pretty neat. I have something "sorta" uncommon.Leave a comment:

Updated first post for correct pic so there won't be any more confusion.
And there are definitely some years/ makes that are unicorn! Can probably be used to barter prices for the better or worse. "Well they made 45600 of these it's not THAT special"Leave a comment:

Cabrio and touring were on the second chart, I see no breakdown between 4dr/2dr or any other options.
What does SKD stand for on the far right of the first chart?Leave a comment:

Do they consider the convertibles a package/option? It would be cool to see the distribution of auto's, manual's, Convertibles, 4 doors, coupes, etc.Leave a comment:

And on that note, only 1603 '91-build 325i? Divide that by coupe and having Sport package, and Calypso, it seems my car is a tad more rare than I than I would have expected. I keep forgetting E36 was already available in Yurp for '91 MY.Leave a comment:
