Ok, then a bad example, but you get the point. It's in order of design date. Maybe E33 was the first variation of the E30 designed after the 8 and 7.

They were there. E53 for example is the X5 that will end this year to be replaced by the E70. All the numbers are used for different engine packages or body types. The Z4 roadster is the E85, and the coupe is the E86. Back when they were producing the E30, the codes E31, E32, E33 etc. would have been used in the factory to designate the different trim levels. yeah they wasted some numbers, i guess they probably did that "strategically"". Then another thing with their whole concept of making the 3er Sedan & Coupé totally different cars you go : E90 and E92.
Why not like E90/4 and E90/2???

    Oh well.......

They've been doing it for a while. As soon as they started to do away with the driver oriented console. Sucks. e36's e46's and e30's etc etc had em. The e60 dosen't.

It's probably because they need to do some street tests, to fine tune the car. I remember one of my clients let me sit in the new Mazdaspeed 3. It had Michigan dealer plates. Man, 2.3L turbo focus/3 chassis. Should be pretty quick, in a straight line. lol
