I dont think its that bad but I've only been on the ncsu wolfline. but I live in Garner now, so public transit is a no go.

I'll get right on that :p I used to walk to work, when I lived about a mile from the office.

Bret, can you suggest any good locksmiths?

Carpooling with the wifey actually hasn't been that bad, aside from the rush to get to class today. But it does save us on gas and she has AC :D

    +1

I *love* how everyone has an opinion or a brilliant idea, yet most don't even know WTF they're talking about.

The steering lock is a BITCH to disable, especially if you don't want to mess up the appearance of your car inside. It's very easy to hotwire the car to get it started, but that won't help until you get the steering lock disabled or unlocked.

And yes, the key cylinder is pretty easy to replace, IF you have the key!!! Otherwise, it's a PITA. Hell, it's easier to just yank the whole steering column out and replace the whole thing, cylinder/switch and all.

A good locksmith should be able to cut a key no problem- it'll probably cost you $75-100 to get it done though.....

    Bret.

Well there we have it, start the car from the engine compartment, pop the steering wheel lock and you don't need no stinking keys!

to unlock the steering wheel you just put a screwdriver between the back of the steering wheel and the steering wheel cover and push up on it til it disengages.

You should be able to start the car by jumping two pins on the diagnostic plug in the engine bay... pins 11 and 14 iirc on the E28 and E24, but look it up first so you don't break anything.

The only issue then is the steering column lock. If you can get that disengaged you will be home free!

How much does an ignition lock for the E30 cost? You might be better off drilling out the lock with a 3/8" drill bit just so you can keep going and then check the junkyards for a car with the key still in the ignition. Pulling the lock and installing it in your car is relatively easy.

Don't rip apart your car just to get it started. Call a friend and get a ride. You do have friends don't you?
Call a locksmith and shell out the green.
Yes, I have friends, but they dont live that close to me and my work/class schedule is different every day. I carpooled with my wife today but even that doesnt work out the greatest because she will have to kill 2 hours after work waiting for me to get out of class (going home and coming to pick my up is kind of stupid since home is 30 minutes away).

and I'll be calling locksmiths in a bit but from past experience they dont seem to be the speediest around here and for some reason most say they cant make a bmw key, eventhough they know its an older bmw without the laser cut keys...

I have a little steering wheel key ring that has a spring loaded latch on it. SOMEHOW, the ignition key popped off the ring... dont ask me how JUST that one fell off.

Option #1. Get a BMW decoder key set-

    Option #2. Call a locksmith.

Option #3. You can pop open the steering collumn and remove the ignition switch from the ignition lock and then turn it with a key or a screw driver. Just be careful not to hold the metal terminals while starting the car, they can get very hot against your skin. That will get the car started but unfortunately the steering wheel will still be locked. You might have to drill out the lock to free the wheel.
