-89 octane is just blended from 87 and 91/93. Really it is.

I'm sure they exist howver I have never seen an owner's manual that specified 89 octane gas. I think it's pretty much worthless either you need to run premium or you don't. I don't think car companies tune cars for use with 89 octane I think it's oil company genius getting you to pay for something you don't need thinking you're doing something good for your vehicle so you drive away happy and they have more of your money.

My E38 740i requires 89.

That would be a 325e (don't think they had an m20b25 in the DBs). If it comes down to 325e vs. 318i, I would go 318i.
