Mostly cause at 15, my older sister smashed her 84 318i up [ran a red light] and my dad bought another one with a blown motor to use for parts. i fixed that car over the summer and then proceeded to tear the parts can into its most basic form. learned by doing, not by asking its the only way

So I tried loosening this bolt. Does it loosen all the way and drop down, or does it just stop? Mine just stops at about where it is in the picture

I don't think you need to worry about that nut (on the shaft). Just pop the column out of the slots by pushing forward. Then, move it out of the way of the slots, then pull it back into the cabinet.
