    They were the factory bushings so it was just due to the dry-rot.

    The cold start rattle could be the timing chain tensioner. I replaced mine with the updated M44 version (old style discontinued) a few weeks ago and it solved my rattle. It's a quick 10 minute job.
    Thanks mike, big fan of your 318is! I actually got one on order! I'm just glad the cam gear teeth look good on this one. Had to redo the entire chain on my old 318iC; what a pain.
