    Mr. B's House of Hoopties

The picture quality will be better now that I'm taking photos for something more important than instagram clout --

    The truck is a '91 or '92 Ranger 2.3 Lima EFI / 5spd Mazda trans / open 3.08 7.5" 28 spline rear booty.

It's a peculiar shade of metallic green.. With a very South West pin stripe on the sides..

Untitled by Omar Albasateneh, on Flickr\

This is the only picture I have of the truck in it's original form when I first purchased it off my uncle for a measly 500 bucks

My first truck in my mind wasn't an early 90s Ranger, but I grew to love this truck since I bought it back in 2019.

After many thousands of miles and many trips out into the desert, I decided this truck deserves a little love.

The tentative plan right now is a Ford 302 built to r3v

    T56? manual transmission

8.8" rear end w a 31 spline axle and torsen LSD

I found a 302 on CL for a few hundred bucks and took the Ranger to get it's new power plant

Untitled by Omar Albasateneh, on Flickr

Untitled by Omar Albasateneh, on Flickr

I don't have photos of the heads, but they were sent off for the treatment, new valves and dual springs to make sure we're going to sail without trouble past 6.5k RPM

I'll post some up when I'm back at the shop tomorrow.

As for the rear end, I picked up a 2004 Ranger FX4 8.8" rear end with the specs I mentioned above.

The original route was to go with an explorer rear end to gain disc brakes, but the locker wasn't a torsen like the FX4, plus, new spring perches and shock mounts would have to be welded to get that sucker to fit. The FX4 axle on the other hand is a direct fit.

I'll be redoing that whole rear end before it's installed here in the next few weeks. New shoes, drums, hardware and bearings.

In the mean time, I though we could make the truck look half way decent and get rid of the bicycle tires plus, get some fresh lights on the front and back.

IMG_0227 by Omar Albasateneh, on Flickr

New headlights and some trim paint for the grill helped a lot.

IMG_0228 by Omar Albasateneh, on Flickr

Next, the stance of the truck needed a little attention.

I went with the aluminum ford ranger wheels from a 2005 truck since they're incredibly light, probably close to the same as the metal steelies the truck had.

100 bucks on offer up and a nice drive down to Dana Point and they're mine

After a drive out to the desert, I was getting gnarly wheel rub in the front due to the height and blown out shocks, so a leveling kit was installed and new shocks all around.

... and of course, some nice A/T WildPeaks

What a difference all that made. Plus, some new tails in the back really helped the overall look of the truck.

    Other things that were done on the truck;

    ball joints
    camber bushings
    timing belt
    water pump
    radiator
    added some high beams
    added a stereo
and a bunch more I can't remember off the top of my head

I'm planning on fabricating a custom canvas camper and frame for the back which should be taking place as soon as the e30 is back on the road.

    I DO have an e30

here's a pic to prove it

and soon a thread on my r129 will be making an appearance (which is my favorite car I own LOL)

Nice, glad you got the thread going!

That '89 was picked up new by my Dad the month I was born, and it's what got me in to the whole E30 game when it towed the very first 318i I bought many years ago.

It met a sorry end after my brother had it for a couple of years, never took care of it, and sold it non running. Last pic I have of that good old truck way in the back.

An FJ isn't domestic, you should get a GMC version of the GMT800 with a 4.3 and a stick.

And I absolutely love it. The more build threads and journals, the better.

            You're right.

I think this is what I need... so I can save R3V

Dare I said that could be a tow vehicle for the MR2 for track days? In addition to storing tools and spares, you could sleep/camp in the back of that thing. Imagine the possibilities of the murals you could paint on the sides of that van. Or better yet, create a vinyl wrap of your R3V signature for the van.

                      roguetoaster MORE MFKN RANGERZ!!!

What years were you looking at that were 4k?

So the truck can use a rear and front bumper. I'll be replacing the rear with an OE bumper and for the front I've been thinking of crafting something with more of a cool factor... I'm thinking an OE front bumper with a bull bar..

I really want that retro 90s look with some lighting on a roll bar

With my larger wheel and tire set up, this should look prettttty guuud on my truck.

Also, recently I've been entertaining selling the 302 when I finish it, since they go for a pretty penny.. and going turbo since the SVO mustang used the same lima 2.3.

Everything was too expensive for a while in MD. If I get another Ranger I'd like a Duratec model, and ideally a 2010 or 11 for the discs, but any '04+ would work. If I'm honest I was also shopping Colorados/Canyons, but ended up with the 150, which I like. Basically, I wanted to do a turbo sport truck, and I'm not much of a brand fanatic, but now I have something that is not ever going to be a sport truck.

As far as styling you could take cues from the former SCCA RaceTruck series, but the retro cool off road thing is also awesome. I also wish we still had a small truck racing series, or even one for full sizes, just not in a NASCAR way, more like in a showroom plus sort of series.

OOH, I really wanted to TTC swap that '89 before it went away, even found a donor car within a mile of where the truck was, but no one else could be bothered, and swapping a truck that wasn't mine wasn't happening. Pretty sure the Thunderbirds offered a few HP over the SVOs, and are probably easier to find. Ultimately the V8 swap makes more sense, but the turbo swap is way more cool.

It's awesome how a few seemingly minor changes can have a huge impact on the overall image. Now you just need to finish up that side pinstriping to make this thing look like a can of Arizona Tea.

It really looks completely different with only a few things replaced

The SVO swap would be cool, but you're right, the V8 makes sense, plus I already started with that, so that's most likely going to be the motor that goes in.
