Why would any "law-abiding citizen" need an assault rifle? For defense? Against what? A 10 point buck?

No one needs anything. Why do cops need Assault rifles? Because if they encounter a situation like the Hollywood bank shootout, they need the fire power to compete. If criminals have access to them, why shouldn't the general law-abiding citizens have the same kind of fire power?

If you want to argue what's the reason for needing it, we can start to argue against a myriad of everyday items we use because "What's the use of it?"

I mean, why do I have two cars when I could just public transportation or walk? Ride a bicycle? Instead of spewing caustic toxins into the air?

It's overkill, sure having two or three cars may also be considered overkill as well, but having a gun is one thing, having something used by most armies seems pointless and unsafe for the average "law-abiding citizen."
