GF8, or, if you want underpowered shame, G20. Nissan/Infiniti really screwed the pooch with that car. A lot of people do some of the SR20 waps to wake them up, but even with a manual they are underpowered, and can't get out of their own way.

i drive a 1997 plymouth voyager. its fully loaded and in great condition... only paid $1000 seems to be decent, until one day the transmission dies... i hear it a common issue with the mini-vans.

I was going to suggest.... your first suggestion actually; an older Impreza. Reliable, cheap, easy to find, and great in the snow. If you need a but more space, the older outbacks/foresters are getting cheaper too.

maybe so, but they're also weak as shit. i went for a audi 100cs last winter with studded snows. cost me $800. no it was not fast, but they will do highway speeds (even uphill, the scooby won't, i tried), they never get stuck, and leather, heated seats, power everything, and so on is nice in a winter beater. fro that kind of money you could probably get a higher mileage a4 wagon too.

I say get a suzuki samurai. Necessarily cute for the ladies, but also surprisingly versatile vehicles. The Kurosawa associations that come with it are a freebie.

The little 4 cylinder is fuel efficient enough for today's most environmentally conscious hicks, yet provides enough oomph with the 63hp engine to outrun the strongest of lawn mowers.
