I realize there is an aviation thread but this deserves its own thread. We will now be down to 4 network carriers. Is American Airlines next. This is yet another sign of the times if you ask me. Competition, not combination!
I've done a bit of reading and have gathered that I myself should enjoy a few personal benefits from this i.e. Continental will open up some terminals to Southwest in Newark as a condition to suade the DOJ and now Southwest will have some opportunities at LaGuardia and Reagan, as well as Logan. (I have some peoples in NYC and fly there often). All in all, though, this is bad for travelers. Not sure how this will affect international travel (United/Continental)
