Dont hate the Machine , hate the asshat that is riding ! It really doesnt end with harleys ,with sportbike guys removing their mufflers around here. As far as loud being safer, there are much more effective ways to ride safely and i choose those. 95% of the people that can hear your exhaust are not in the position to compromise your safety, they are just annoyed. Make that 98%.

I pulled up to a guy on a Harley the other day. It was a stock sportster or something, I'm really not sure, but it wasn't very loud. What I laughed at though was the engine was shaking around and vibrating so violently, that it was just a big blur. You couldn't even read the HD badge on the side.
You should see the bikes with solid engine mounts, the rider becomes a blur
loud pipes don't bother me, i've kinda become used to them.
then again, that may be because the ABATE of maryland lower eastern shore chapter director, and the events coordinator are two of my best friends, and both live on the same street as i do. i hear/see alot of bikes. the events coordinator and her husband have 2 of the loudest, and fastest bikes i've seen, but by fastest you all should already know they arent HDs. honda vtx>hd
I love seeing mid life crisis dads riding harleys. They always wear their kirkland brand white high tops, jeans, leather jacket (polo shirt if its a nice day) and a turtle shell helmet. You know they are out rasing hell all pissed off because the wife made them mow the lawn while they where watching baseball. These guys love sitting in your cars blindspot and then when you start to merge not seeing them they do a pipe blast and middle finger combo. Its either that or they are goin slower than the flow of traffic.
Who remembers the 20+ biker pile up on I5 a year of so ago?

i live a few blocks from a bar, and most nights around closing time in the summer its braaaaaaaaaaaummmbrarrrrrrrrrrrraaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrr . over and over some of them are ridiculous, i cant image how someone can sit on a bike making that much noise, must be deafening. I have nothing against sensible Harley enthusiasts, but cant stand the duchebags that make them as loud as they possibly can. they always ticket the cars around here for being too loud but dont do a damn thing about the bikes.
Seems like a lot of you guys have had only negative experiences with biking groups..
My dad was a member of bike group for 20+ years, and it was a pretty tight knit group. They weren't into being loud, obnoxious douchebags, they rode primarily in charity events, parades, etc.. At my dad's funeral we had just over 100 bikers leading the procession to the cemetery, and damn near every one of them had some story to tell about my dad when we got there. That's something I'll never forget, and its a shame that they're being stereotyped as what many of you have said here.
There's a guy that lives in my neighborhood that has a loud one. He blips the throttle endlessley as he coasts down the gradual slope of our street. Why do they do that? I understand that "loud pipes saves lives", but common! Stop making an unnecessary racket! Most of you prolly love HDs. I however, hate them.
The Southpark episode pretty much hits all of the nails. Needle dick old guys who are attention whores on par with Paris Hilton. I havent met one yet that isnt a douche (and I have had the opportunity to decide they are douches) like this fucker who is the husband of my dads friend. He is one of those assholes who will show up with some PBR, drink all of your scotch and then tell firefighter stories despite the fact that his fat, old ass is nothing more than an inspector.
