Once you go tumbling ass over head in a ford explorer you will never fall asleep at the wheel ever again...

I have no idea how people fall asleep at the wheel. I've done 12-14 hour driving days and still not fallen asleep.

You and your car fared a lot better than my brother. Who sheared the cars steering wheel with his face.
You can stick magnets to his left cheek and forehead now. I usually do it when we're out hunting and he passes out. Helps him pick up the radio stations in his head.
He was half a mile from home.. And I take falling asleep at the wheel very seriously ever since that incident.

I know I will get shit for this, but I have found the best way for me to stay up during long trips late at night with no traffic is speed like a madman. Nothing keeps you awake quite like a huge grin on your face and frantically scanning for cops.
I don't do it on the regular or anything, but I have averaged 95 or so mph including gas stops on a few long trips in the wee hours of the morning. Don't be an asshole though. You can cruise very quickly and still be respectful of traffic when it's present. Also, don't be an idiot. Don't try this if your car isn't in good shape, or if you're inexperienced. If you are starting to feel groggy and nothing's working, just pull over and sleep. Whoever you're driving to see will understand.

I have a bad problem of dozing while I am driving. Especially in my automatic truck.
One thing I have found that never fails to cure it is chewing sun flower seeds. If I start dozing I pull over a get a pack and I'll be wide away after that. Apparently keeping myself busy trying to get those tiny little seeds out of the shells gives me enough of something to do to keep me alert

It's happened to me more than once, but strangely when I drove straight from Halifax to Jersey City in one straight shot I never started to nod off.

whew man thats scary stuff. I remember waking up to almost hitting the center divider and noticing that all the cars behind me were backed off by a mile or so. Definitely needs to be an issue discussed more often on car trips.

Got really close driving to the picnic this year. We spent 8 hours stranded on the side of the highway, so we didn't make it to James' house until like 4 in the morning. I5 for 3 hours early in the morning sucks. Ended up rolling the windows down a few times even though it was like 40ยบ out and blasted Pendulum most of the way there. lol
