Return it. Unless you got a really good deal on it.

I think your confusing component with composite. I'm a believer that there is no need to convert your component to HDMI but if your just starting out i'd just get an HDMI cable. A crappy HDMI cable will usually have less distortion then cheap RCA cables. You'll end up spending quite a bit on quality RCAs. But for most people with their crap $500 Vizios and low hertz rate LCDs won't notice the difference. I have an older high quality panasonic that kicks the crap out of most newer with higher resolution ratings. Also have a very old NEC.

HDMI sucks. You will never see a difference using standard component cables.

When you change the resolution a new screen will pop up displaying the change and asking if this is acceptable. You have 60 seconds to press ok or it will revert back to the standard setting which outputs though the AV cables that cam standard with the system. An HD cable was not standard in most PS3 bundles. Most likely it is simply trying to output in the wrong format. I had a similar issue when trying to hook up mine which is setup for HDMI to my friends standard TV. Simply get some AV cables and you're good.

Have you tried yelling at it or hitting it with a blunt object?

holding down the power button doesnt set it to the lowest resolution. after you start it that way, it searches through the outputs until you can see it pop up on the tv. make sure the tv is set to the correct input and try again, but let it work for a few minutes (each setting may take 30 sec, and there are at least 5 different settings)

if this doesnt work, start troubleshooting.
1)check another hdmi devise with said tv
    3)try new hdmi cable
4)try a standard def ps3 connection (the one that comes in the box)

I think you need to get some A/V cables. Go to Gamestop and try to find some used ones and return them when you're done.

i had to do this with mine, i had to hook it up with the composite cables and reset the stuff through the settings or held the power button for like TEN seconds. You can download the instruction manual PDF online if that helps.

Try another HDMI cable, if not the av out (3aux) needs the special PS3 adapter for the back and they are around 30 bucks. Try a different TV also, that way you can trouble shoot your signal flow before buying things you don't need.
