I can't speak for most girls, but I'm lucky enough that my group of friends has for the most part met girls who at least try to learn about cars so they're capable of knowing what may or may not need repairs on their car and not getting bent over the mechanics toolbox when they go to get things fixed (if none of our friends are able to help them fix it, which is usually not the case as we all have access to a full shop with a hoist).
My girlfriend on the other hand hates cars, and it seems the only time she ever actually notices anything at all about mine is when it's an upgrade that I'm trying to hide or at least not tell her the cost of. She get's annoyed when I spend all my free cash on the car instead of going out with her. New tires? She never notices. Fix the broken passenger seatbelt? Not even a word. Fix air conditioning? Didn't have a clue. But the day I install my new MOMO wheel "Is that a new steering wheel? How much did that cost?" or when I installed euro trim "Did you get new bumpers? what was wrong with the old ones?"
FFFUUUUUUUU

How much does the average girl know about cars?

Girls are probably less mechanically inclined than guys in general. I'm not trying to make any insulting statement, but simply look at the number of girls on this forum. There's maybe 4-5 females and the rest are guys. It's simply an inclination to be interested in certain things based on gender. If we went on fashion forums there would probably be a lot more girls than guys (again, I don't mean that in any insulting way, I've browsed fashion forums myself before).

As said before there is a lot less girls into the technical side of cars then guys.
mind you I know a lot of guys who know squat about cars.
Though I find it interesting that most if not all girls I know are never interested in anthing technical, all they care about is if it works and how to use it. Where guys seem to be interested in how that thing works and if there is another way to do it or use it.
I wish my girl was interested in cars but she is not, dosn't even want me to teach her. :(

My girl knows quite a bit. She's quick to name the BMW model codes and looks happily at me for gratification when she gets them right. She just bought a red 535is and I can't wait to teach her everything about e28s. Yeah.

they know jack fucking shit unless you date them for awhile and teach them. Otherwise I'd say 1% of girls know.
They usually just tell me to not kill them when I drive and get scared when you drive normal speedlimit around a turn.
Freeride53 summed it up perfect.

Lets see I went threw BMW step, when i was at UTI.
When i spot something wrong with the car,ill discuss with my mother.
My dad asked me why does my car sound loud? After a IE exhaust was installed 4 months ago. :? My dad wanted to sell the 540I/6 and keep the lame e38. My mom told him keep the E34 or else!

It's nice to see that there are indeed mature and intelligent people on R3V. Thank you
But I would also agree from what I've seen, that on average, females aren't as interested as males in cars. I wish there were more females who were as interested in cars as I am.
