i'd say austin. very tourists friendly. they have everything there. and since its cheaper you'll probably be way more comfortable.
however if you've never been outta the country, and you don't see yourself going soon, go to london. experience a different country at least once.

Yeah, it all depends on your access. Being near a major airport can really cut down your total travel time vs. having to need to spend a couple hours on a connecting flight. So having to use a smaller hub makes long trips more of a pain.

Shit, and here I thought I lived at the end of the earth.
I guess I should be happy I can at least fly direct to almost anywhere, from here.

I have been there twice in the last year, and it's 9 hrs flying from the farthest west in Canada. Vancouver.

I passed through Brussels during July a few years ago and the weather was nice, so hopefully will be able to spend more time with the local brews and luck out again. A week in Munich for spring break was cold and windy, but the adventures were excellent. Sex, Drugs, and Football Thugs had some good stories about the clubs in the south of France, and definitely enjoyed all the music from there. I'd much rather check it out vs ever going back to Paris. Oh well. I think everyone should make a list and go everywhere.
Yep Buddy: I think you have to consider time at vacation vs. travel time. Looking up flights, 5 hours travel time with one stop form Norfolk to Austin, for ~$400 each. 10+ hours of travel time to London with $890 each. If you are only spending a few days, I'd rather only invest a small fraction getting to where you want to be. OP - Save up and spend a week+ during 2014 abroad.

A less than week long trip to London is a waste. I'm sure Top Gear is better presented on TV, can't say that watching a race on TV is a better experience than taking it all in live. I've spent a couple weeks in England a few years back, one week in the midlands area and one in London, and would not say that the expense is worth going for less time. Too much to see that you'll just leave with less money in your wallet and a list of things you wish you had gotten to see.

It's just a cultural experience to revel in it, I'd wander around and hit up the sites that interest you most, whether it be museums, the London Eye, bars (Absolut Ice Bar is always a chill spot), whatever. Tell your wife you can go to Harrods and should help seal the deal.
It's not a cheap place, but is 40% cheaper than when I lived there, so don't let that hold you back. Julien is biased because he's a frog, but if you are Anglo-Saxon, I'd say it's a worthy trip for heritage. Although there may be good reasons to visit elsewhere too (Holland, Brussels, Saint-Tropez, Rome, Munich, Prague, Barcelona, whatever), London is a fun trip so do what you want and then just plan for next year.
Plus, I saw the coolest cars while I was there, but maybe because I was in one of the most posh parts of the city. Lambo dealer one block to the SW, Ferrari two blocks to the North. But London throughout seemed to be a place for car guys, congestion tax or not.
