Bought a Lemon, Any Suggestions?

After realizing that you made a mistake, you need to look at this in a positive light.

Here's how I would look at it:

Although it needs some repairs, you can actually end up with a car that you are more than happy with because in the end, after the repairs you will have a car that you can rely on because you personally replaced vital parts that wear and fail on the m62 engine.

If you only paid $6k for the car, you actually got the car cheap, so if you put another $2k into it, you're still below market value for a nice msport. $8k in for a car that you know will run a while isn't a big deal as far as I'm concerned. Yes, you need to do the maintenance, but in the end you'll be better off because of it.

Positive man, positive. That guy will get his, guaranteed. Just worry about righting your errors rather than trying to get back at him.

Plus you took a goofy trip with your wife, you'll both laugh about it some day, rest assured, you may both be 90, but what the hell, I once drove from NJ to Georgia to purchase an interior, only to get there and find that the door panels were less than stellar, my fiancé still laughs at me for shit like that.

This, totally. My wife and I have this same relationship and it's a lot of fun. Any road trip in a fun car is worth taking even if you don't reach the intended destination.

When I bought my e30 I ended up bringing it back to the seller am hour later with some problems. He made made everything right and we're friends to this day.

Just fix the car and enjoy it. Next time listen to your instinct and mark this one as a learning experience.

Well, I wanted another e39. I've owned a few in the past and in my experience they are the best drivers sedans ever built. Yes I know of all the maintenance issues. This is more of a case of me being pissed that the car was misrepresented and shady shit was done to hide multiple issues. This has nothing to do about "a young guy being excited to buy a new car"

I'm not that young A. and B. I've bought and sold more cars than I can count. I used to be a private dealer.

In this case I was simply being foolish to rely on someones word. I've done it many of times in the past and it's never burned me this bad. Then again, I've never bought a car so far up north. I know here in Texas we all know not to do stupid shit unless you want serious trouble.

The money isn't an issue either. I've spent plenty on replacement parts anticipating the cars arrival. Suspension, interior, and drivetrain parts. It's all in my garage.

And yes, M60 timing shit is terrible.. Multiply that by 80 for the M62TU. It's going to suck that's for sure.

I dont' mean to make things worse, but I really dont' understand why so many younger guys think they can buy a BMW and not expect repairs. There's a reason why the general consensus is that you should have an additional 1-2g/s saved when purchasing one of these cars, for additional repairs/maint it'll need.

OP, if you want something that's reliable with stick and 4 doors for the family, have you considered an Accord sedan? You can get one that'll get you better fuel economy than a 5 series, and easier to maintain

Sucks man, classic case of excitement for new car eclipses all thoughts of common sense. You're going about it the right way though, suck it up and fix it. Doesn't sound like it was a bad deal even with the price of repair. m60 timing stuff is no fun, good luck!

You may want to consider reporting him to the PA attorney general's office for fraud. At a minimum, telling eBay that you did not pay for the car when you clearly did (you have the title and presumably a cancelled check to prove it) is intentional misrepresentation. While it may not fix your dilemma, it could prevent a recurrence.

And, as someone else has stated, you may want to sue him. . .

Thanks for the insight everyone. I'm slowly calming down and accepting the fact that I have some work to do.

I dropped the oil pan and found shards of aluminum and timing components so I have a $1500 and 10hr repair ahead of me.

It sucks so much because I was trying to find something with 4drs and a manual to haul the family in. I really shouldn't have sold my vert. I could have done better.

This. Honestly, you're up shit's creek with no paddle. That's why you always do a pre-buyers inspection, even if you're out of state. The seller shouldn't have any issues with taking it to a shop to have it checked out and if it's an issue, do not buy it. Just fix it, in the grand scheme of things it's not worth the energy to go after the guy. Karma's a bitch, he'll get what he's got coming to him. I know of a shady used car guy that sold a lemon. Buyer came back all pissed off, told the guy to fuck off. Guy waited till he was leaving, fucking kidnapped him, beat the leaving shit out of him, and then left him naked and tied up around a light pole in the wal-mart parking lot. True story.
