^^ Is that the V8 with the accessories run of a jackshaft from the back of the engine....except the alternator, which has a conventional belt up front.....proving they didn't have to do all the jackshaft shit.
...and this is the timing chain....on the back of the engine....

I had a B7 S4, loved it, and actually was a big fan of the interior but I hate BMW interiors so maybe just a preference thing. Avant raises the price a fair amount typically, if you can find one with a replaced motor go for it, their timing systems are just too weak for my taste and you have to pull the engine to replace the guides since the timing is on the clutch side of the engine. I don't know of many of those V8's running beyond 150k without running up against needing $5k+ + in work.
That said I would buy another one someday if I found the right deal.

E46 m3 for cheaper maintenance and reliability, although it's still not very cheap for maintenance. E39 m5 for pure awesome v8 power, but be prepared to fork some cash on maintenance.
