WOW, this issue is always very emotional, I respect vegetarians, and have a friend who runs a vegan foundation, we get toguether and he eats his salad and i don't say anything, I try to eat a stake and he gets nauseated, so I have to eat away from him, i guess that's his problem, not mine.
Regarding the guys here that have made it on a vegetarian diet, congratulations, and please check your muscle mass and your nutrient levels, as long as those ar ok go on.
Now, I have not eaten vegetables in all my life, I am fructose intolerant and cannot eat fruit, and since when i was a kid i got sick on fruit, my parents chose to remove al vegetables from my diet, so i was never used to the taste or looks on them.
I am still alive and healthy (at least my doctor says so). I eat basically meat and dairy, I have tried some potatoes and some vegetables as an adult, but I just plainly don'tlike them.
So as you can see, it's possible to survive on a meat and dairy diet also, I do take vitamin supplements though (and have all my life) cause I can't eat fruit.
But i don't go around preaching others to do as i do, mine is an inherited defficiency and to others:

It's a steak 'blue' - or rare-rare, except you sear the crap out of it to lock in all the flavor. I've been a 'rare' guy since learning in my younger 20's that good meat didn't need a bonfire to cook it.

I was at a joint in New Orleans owned by Emerril (sp?) - and they had a ribeye on the short list of specials that night - we sat at the chef's table so you really don't order a formal dinner, just try a bunch of small dishes as they come off the prep line.
So someone ordered the ribeye, and I commented at the chef that it looked good, so he came back at me with a small cut and asked how I like 'em - "rare as you dare" is my normal comeback - it lets the server know I like it rare, and if the meat is good that night the chef can go as 'blue' as he felt was safe. - so I said that, the chef smiled and said "I'll give you black-n-blue, you'll love it." Needless to say, the best ribeye I'd had until I got home and experimented with some real heat on the BBQ.
I've had to explain myself a few times locally, but usually there is some translation for it at any steak joint.

Worth a try if you're into it.

Sadly the stereotype is there since the stinky hippies are the ones out vocalizing it, not the normal folks like you and Ken.
    Seconded.

It's one of those things I say/type to see who's reading and who's scanning. Congradulations.

As for the dairy farm thing, if you are as familiar as you say, then you know that there is a lot of differences from place to place. I'm very sure about the farms I'm local to. Maybe things are different where you are though.

I don't know why there is some huge misconception out there about vegetarians being preechy crazy hippies when 90% of them are just like me and have absolutely no qualms about any one eating meat.
You do what you want to do, and I'll do what I want to do... there doesn't need to be some intense debate over such a trivial issue.

i love how people claim that a vegetarian lifestyle is unhealthy, and yet millions of people somehow find a way to survive doing it. i was a vegetarian for 13 years and i managed to make it.

dairys are a fucking nightmare. the whole happy cows thing is complete bullshit. animals living knee deep in their own shit, and the stormwater runoff that comes off of them is full of shit, bacteria, tons of nitrogen, etc. trust me, i have first hand experience with this. environmental regulations will catch up to the dairy industry at some point, and i hope it's soon.
oh, and just to beat you to it:

    1. i'm not a hippie
    2. no, i'm not a tree hugger
    3. no, i'm not leaving this country
    4. yes, i eat meat
    5. go fuck yourself
