all those who are saying that its no big deal or its not that serious are saying so because they are members of the dominant group. you can not be discriminated aginst if you are in the DOMINANT group therefore, you can not attempt to sympathize. unless you are directly affiliated with the group in question then your opinion means squat

black people "thought" they were reclaiming the word by putting a positive "pro- black" spin on it this backfired big time. the overuse of the word in today's culture has made people who arent black feel so lax as to the point that they themselves might say it. fact of the matter is jokingly or not the word is still offensive and those who do use it are in fact increasing its potency as a term of degradation. i dont use it i dont feel anyone should. no it doesnt offend me when someone of my color uses it in my presence but if a white person or someone not a member of my group uses it of course it stings like hell. for reasons i shouldnt need to explain....

racism has split up into two types aversive racism and old fashioned racism

aversive racism is the "new" racism-people who do not believe they are racist, people who believe that everyone is equal and those in poverty are poor because they arent working hard enough, this is the land of opportunity, poor ppl are just lazy and its their own fault....as a result averse racists avoid contact with minorities whenever possible

old fashioned racism- direct and overt approach opposing equality of the races kkk,nazis etc

Actually this is not reverse racism. Racism includes the notion of superiority or supremacy, that is the fundamental component of racism. This is not present in this situation. It IS a double-standard though, they exist in our society in many forms. When a man has sex with many women he's considered a stud, if a woman does the same she's considered a slut....double-standard.
