Blu-ray or HD-DVD -- what's winning?

But, i think that when more games come out for only Ps3 it will put bluray over the edge and beat out hddvd. i know a lot of people who buy bluray disks just because the already have the expensive player built into a game console that they bought reguardless of formet

No inside industry info, there's nothing stopping them from developing HD DVD discs that will hold more than current discs. A la dual-layer DVD's, superbit, etc. But the same goes for Blu-Ray.

This sounds hilarious, but many of the big names like Vivid and the like in the porn industry are also hesitant to go to HD at all, because a lot of the actors/producers are wary about the amount of detail that HD shows, and that it will be harder to "hide" a lot of things.

Not only that but I have to ask myself if I REALLY want to see a man's hairy nutsack in high definiition while he is laying the pipe to Jenna Jamerson. I can appriciate the technology of a crystal clear picture but I don't think I would be that interested in seeing the bubbles in the cum.

Odd to think Sony would pull a morality trip about porn content on Blu-Ray when they have the GTA series of videogames.

I wondered if HD-DVD's would play in a standard DVD player, was pretty sure they didn't, but your last comment sealed that for me.

Yeah, I have a PS3 - so I'll just get a copy on Blu-Ray. Really I buy so few movies it probably will be settled as an issue before I buy much more than a dozen movies. I really only buy maybe 1 movie a month, I only have like 80 movies & a few others (Charlie Brown specials disc set, Transformers, Seinfelds, & a bunch of Warren Miller vids).

Right now, it IS too early to tell. But Pierced said has solid merit, it's no secret in the media industry that porn decides the format. About 6 months ago, Sony had released a statement saying that they would not allow porn to be made and/or sold on Blu-Ray, but they seemed to have changed their tune since then, so it's hard to say. I actually haven't started buying anything in HD or Blu-Ray yet, because I don't have a player, and I don't want to start buying until I know a little more what format will come out on top. The plus side is that a lot of HD DVD's are coming out in dual-format discs, with standard DVD on one side and HD on the other, so at least you can buy those, and if HD DVD loses out, you can still watch it on you DVD player, so it's not a total loss. And like someone said earlier, there are a few combo format players, but you're talking $1000-1300 for them, so it's kind of a toss-up. My reccomendation is to wait it out, unless you've got an XBOX 360 or a PS3 already.

I still do. Porn is not as good when you watch it on your computer in 15 second clips. Its much better when you watch it in your dark family room while sitting in a nice soft chair or a comfortable sofa. Also, I still buy porn on VHS because when I want to rewind to search for a particular part, I can't do it on DVD the same way that I can do it with VHS tape. Tape can scroll backwards while DVD's have to skip backwards.

Also, the porn store gives you plenty to look at and choose from. On the internet, you can never really tell if you are going to get a movie, pics, or spam.

Hahaha - I knew it was some goofy reason VHS won back in the day - and that porn remark jogged my memory - it was the porn industry that made us all go VHS, wasn't it? That sounds really familiar anyhow.

I guess since Blu-Ray seems to be the fan favorite right now, and I have a PS3, I'll go that way - if there's already a ton of people doing Blu-Ray before porn executives try and decide, they may not be so successfull at being the "tail wagging the dog" this time around.

I don't even have a HD monitor yet, so I don't expect to see any real difference, just more me planning ahead for the TV purchase somewhere in the coming football season.

My only PS3 gripe is no vibrators in the controllers, but I suppose a stop at an adult store and a little superglue could fix that until they finally do something about it from the factory.

I am hearing more about the Blue-ray than anything else. The other day I got an email from one of my vendors with an advertisement for a Blue-ray DVD burner. It was only $649 and came with 10 blank discs (5 of them re-writeable). I have yet to see an advertisement for an HD-DVD burner. I am not suggesting that it does not exist but I am not seeing anything about it being marketed.

My guess is that Pioneer is banking on the name recognition to carry them through. HD-DVD is more descriptive of what it actually is vs. the name "Blue Ray". I imagine it would be the same way with XM vs. Sirrius. You have AM, FM.. and then there is XM. Economists predicted that XM would be the more successful company even though Sirrius has an overall better product.

I have both, and greatly prefer Bluray. Mainly due to player availability, as well as movie selection

I really see no need for a new, DRM-infested format that requires specific equipment and (in many cases) an internet connection. I think most others seem to agree for the time being, as DVD sales haven't taken a huge hit since these formats have been on the market.
